I still havent changed the name in my German passport. I havent been back since I came here with the K1 visa ...

I read everywhere that I need to go to the consulate to change it but its well over 1.000 miles away.

We want to travel to Germany this summer so how can I change my name and get a new passport? or can I travel there and change it there?

How 'bout you don't change the name in your German passport just yet?

Change it when it expires, not earlier.

All you need your German passport for is to enter (and to leave) Germany, and it really doesn't matter what name in on there. Only change it if you got a face transplant, all new fingers with new fingerprints, and a new DNA . . .

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I have almost the same question.

My fiance and I are working on the K1 Visa. We received NOA1 on January 18.

I checkt my passport and its only valid till mid March 2014.

So I kinda started thinking what if I get approved before that. I mean everyone is kinda looking and comparing the timelines and so I thought, there might be a chance that we will be approved around November. I know its just guessing but "lets all hope for the best and a fast approval, right?". So I am from Germany and my passort needs to be valid till we get married and three months after that ( or am I wrong here?)

This leads me to my questions:

a) Do you think I should aplie for a new passport before Ill send my information to the embassy in Germany and before my interview. I will get my visa in my new passport. This passport would be valid 10 years.

But if I want my name changed in my passport Ill get a new one and I always have to travel with both of my passports. Because my visa will be in my "old" passport.

b) I wait and dont get a new passport. We get married, I aplie for a new passport in the US and get my name changed. But I also have to carry both around with me to travel ( because the Visa is in my "really old" passport.

c ) I get a new one before my interview. I get my name changed on my social security, drivers license etc. but not on my passport. I just have to travel under my maiden name to Germany (and other countries)

Or am I just really confused right now??

Hope someone can help

If you need to have six months of validity on the passport then you had better get approved for the visa by Septemeber of this year. What are the chances of that? Item 'b" is a non-issue as the visa is no longer valid once you use it to enter the US. The K-1 is a one entry visa. So you could apply for a new passport in the US while waiting for advance parole (AP) and then everything will be in the married name. To travel you need your passport and the AP or green card (GC) so you can re-enter the US. The only issue I see is will you have 6 months validity on the passport and if not will the US Embassy issue you a K-1 that expires the same time your passport does?

Your passport has to be valid for six months after the visa is issued. Once in the US, the passport can expire as you cannot travel outside the US and return until you have the AP or GC. So you can enter the US, get married, and file for AOS in the married name and file for a new passport in the married name too. I would see how long Germany is taking to process K-1s once they receive them and see if you can get approved before September of this year.

Good luck,

Dave

Dave,

Thank you so much. This helps me a lot. I think once I receive my NOA2 I can start planing everything a little more accurate. If my NOA2 comes in very late I figure I should aplie for a new passport and let it rush deliver.

But in the magical case that Vermont is speeding up - I might be albe to get everything in one Visa. That would be fantastic. I dont want to travel once I entered the US so that would be totally fine with me to wait on my passport and the AP and GC.
