I-864: Living Abroad -- catching up on backed taxes -- which forms?

I recently discovered that I need to file taxes even though living abroad. I need to file taxes for 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 in order to complete my I-184 (and begin the process of setting things straight with the IRS). My question is this: Do I just need to find the 2009-2012 version of the 1040 and 2555(for those working abroad)??? I can't seem to find any other documentation that would be required. Any tax experts out there that can assist with this question? Thanks.

welcome to VJ! Are you utilizing the advanced search tool here?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

No... I haven't really used the advanced search -- I'm still getting oriented with this site. It's a bit dizzying... Do I just type in a key word in the upper right "search" box?

You technically only need one year worth of taxes for the i-864. It states as such on the form. The other 2 years are just supplemental, but not necessary if you can actually show proof of meeting the poverty guidelines based on a current job(which is an absolute necessity).

Make sure to file for your own purposes of filing so that you cannot get in trouble legally, but as stated for immigration purposes only one year.

Good luck on your journey.

Thanks for the clarification. I will file for 2012 initially and then gather the forms for 2009ff... I don't have any w-2 forms since living and working abroad. My company only paid me cash.Any idea how I show proof of income without a W-2? Oh and BTW... I have a co-sponsor for the I-864... so my income will not need to meet the requirements alone.

If you have a contract or some sort of agreement or discussion in writing from your job when you started at least, that should suffice. I also did not receive aW2 when working abroad, but we had paper pay stubs that I included when I had to do the same thing. I'm no tax expert, but that's what I did when living abroad, the instructions on the 2555 form are pretty clear. Good luck!
