lmao... rupees totally defy my sense of currency. It was so weird watching my husband count his 1000 rupee notes. It looked like so much money. I had to keep reminding myself that each of those was only roughly $20.

Yeah, the same when I was counting Philippine Pesos.

I wish I'd known about that foreign income exclusion... that would have given me justification to file jointly anyway. I don't know how much of a difference it will make in my return. I'll be finding out soon, though. I'm definitely filing jointly this year.

You have three years after the original filing to file an amended return (use 1040X tax form). Pretty simple, we did it to go back and claim Rin's children as dependents. Resulted in a refund of several thousand dollars. Worth the effort to at least run thru the calculations.

Yeah above is pretty important especially if your SO comes on a marriage visa. I went back 3 years once my wife arrived and got her SS#. I filed amended returns changing from single to married filing jointly It resulted in a $10k check from the IRS.

You were married for three years before your wife came over here? Even you are not filing jointly, if you're married your alternative is to file married-filing-separately. Not as single.

She didn't have a SS# until she got here.

Doesn't matter, but that is neither here nor there and after the fact.

People try to make a huge deal out of filing the wrong status making it seem like you will get dragged away by the IRS and locked up.

Which isn't the case.

You should have been filing as married separate and writing in NRA as your spouse' SSN if you didn't want to file an ITIN.

No big deal.

When I amended my return from single to married, it only resulted in a $250 check.

DISAPPOINTED.
