Cousin as housekeeper?

Hello! I am married to a US citizen and I am currently waiting for my visa.

I have a cousin that would like to come live and work in the States. I know it is very hard to move to the States for work if you don't have someone willing to hire you and sponsor you so I was thinking how doable would be if my husband and I decided to sponsor my cousin and hire her as a housekeeper? What kind of petition should be filed for that? And what chances does she have to have another job on the side? Obviously if we hire her we can't give her a pay good enough to make rent an apartment and make live on her own so she would need to have another job on the side (flipping burger is good enough) and make her get on her feet eventually. So my questions are:

1- What kind of visa would we need to file for her to hire her as housekeeper? And how long would that take to get approved (more or less than 1 year)? And how long before that expires?

2- Would she be able to work another job on the side?

3- Would she able to apply for a GC on her own and after how long?

I don't know if this is the right place to post and I wasn't able to find other information. I'll keep looking for more information and I'll eventually delete this post if I can find a similar one.

Thanks a lot to all of you

Giovanna

No work visas for house keeping/ nannying, as there are plenty of Americans who can do that job.

Have her try the diversity visa lottery?

Okay I understand that's idea is a no-no.

We're just trying to figure out what could work best for her, she's a teenager finishing highschool so she might change her mind anytime she wants but in case we all agree on going forward with this, I want to be ready to give her as many info as possible.

How does it work with "au pair" (I think that's the word). I heard a friend of my husband as an Italian girl living with his parents and little sister. She stays with them like a "nanny/housekeeper/guests" but she has no pay. How does that work and would that be exchange visitors visa? Would I be able to do that for a sibling? Anyone can point me to a link on this website where I can read more?

I understand that even me immigrating is a privilege and not a right so I really just wanna get as many info as possible, learn about the different visas that someone could apply for and explain them to my cousin.

We thought that having me in the States would be easier if she wants to find a job. We thought she could come as visitor and look for a job while she is the States but I understand that's illegal. So I suggested her trying to apply for school, that way if she graduates it might be easier for her to have someone hire her and sponsor her even though that sounds tricky because you aren't allowed to look for a job while you're on a student visa, right?

Basically what I want to do is to help her with her "dream" if possible but I absolutely do not want to get in troubles or start an expensive process for nothing.

Yeah I am all about helping the family but I have some "stop signs" here and there and I am not willing to break rules or get in more troubles than necessary.

I will make her try the lottery but it case that doesn't work, I was thinking of a "plan B".

Thanks a lot for the answers

What about university in America on a student visa?

Yes I guess that would be the best choice for her. Seems like the only thing I can do is let her be my guest for a short period of time.

Thanks a lot to all of you!

Yes, considering her age, a student visa would be a great idea (and after all, that is the forum you posted in). They are easy to get, and if you have the finances, you can sponsor her for it (ie pay her college fees, which will be substantial).

Au pair Visas I don't know very much about, but I believe you don;t get to choose the person you want to employ/ have to go via an agency.

So if she decides to study, do you think she can be sponsored by her father (he's in Italy) or maybe we can co-sponsor her (me and my husband +her dad)? All I can give is pretty much shelter and food since I wanna start to study again when I get there, I don't think paying double fees would be doable

Yes absolutely. You could write a letter stating she can stay with you, and the father would need to prove sufficient funds for her to study at whichever university they decide on.

Great! Thanks for the advices! I have no idea how I would do without you all!

You can have multiple ppl supporting a student that is not an issue as long as you have docs to prove from banks or other assets that show you have enough money to support the student.

Education in US is pretty expensive, specially for international student.. you can do little research of your own and you will see for 4 yr college it would be starting around 60k+ for each year.

Thanks a lot. I am thinking of all the possible ways she can enter in the US but sounds like the harder part would be to convince her to go on with her studies :)

I might go open another post in the off topic section about schools and education. I still don't understand that good how it all works in the States

Yeah I know it can be that expensive. It's something that I have to think through and it needs a good plan.

Thank you
