my fiance went and got his passport....he showed me and first thing i notice was his last name was spelled differently than we did on all his paperwork.....we spelled "Ashor" in all the papers and it was translated to "Ashor".....get his passport and it says "Ashour"........has anyone had any experience in dealing with name spelled wrong on egyptian passport...or had problems of arabic writing being translated wrong?.....my fiance swears his name is spelled "Ashor" thats the way he has always spelled it in english.....but all his egyptian documents are in arabic, so it's not as simple as checking to see if it matches his birthcerficate cuz its in arabic........he's going back to passport office tomorrow to see if they will change it to "Ashor" the correct way.....i hope they agree and it is easy to get the name changed....i have a bad feeling tho.....every thing is difficult in egypt....any thoughts...is it a big deal to have arabic translated name spelled wrong?

My fiance and I ran into this same problem with his first name--he works in a field which uses English a lot but spells his name differently than on his passport. However, we knew about it before we submitted any forms so we just stuck with the version on his passport in order to make everything the same for the U.S. We also wondered if it would be a problem.

I can imagine this happens a lot though, when the beneficiaries are from countries with different alphabets. Anyone vaguely familiar with Arabic or other alphabets knows that there are often many ways to transliterate the sounds. A name spelled "Ashor" vs. "Ashour" is not a translation from the Arabic, but a transliteration.. it shouldn't be a problem. But like I said, my fiance and I played it safe and just used one spelling.

I'm curious though if anyone had experience with sending in documents that had different spellings..

We met when Heather travelled to Egypt to be an au pair!

Make sure to call the embassy to ask if it will be accepted. They left the letter D off of my husbands name when they printed Mohamed. My husband called them to see it it was ok and it was fine at poe. Good Luck
