George P. Bush raises $1.3 million from family and friends for statewide office in Texas

George P. Bush has raised a whopping $1.3 million in less than two months – with a financial boost from the family and the Bush political network – to launch his first race for statewide office in Texas. Top contributors included father Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida, and uncle George W. Bush, the former president. Each gave $50,000 to the younger Bush’s fledgling political campaign. Uncles, cousins and long-time family financial also sent checks. Bush has indicated he’s looking at a race for Texas land commissioner in 2014, but has not ruled out the possibility of running for attorney general or even governor depending on the circumstances. The robust financial showing in his first weeks of fundraising indicates that the Bush network is very much alive and ready to help bankroll the next generation of the nation’s best-known Republican political family.

“We’re very, very pleased with the report,” said campaign manager Trey Newton. “It shows a lot of support for George P. not only in Texas but across the country.” The 36-year-old Fort Worth attorney, who operates a real estate private equity firm in Dallas, is a member of the Naval Reserve, operates a real-estate private equity firm in Dallas and has spent considerable time in recent years attempting to attract young professionals to the GOP. Bush speaks Spanish, and his mother Columba is from Mexico. In a party struggling to win over a growing Latino constituency, some conservatives view George P. Bush as a candidate on the state, and eventually on the national, scene with strong appeal to Hispanics. Bush will file Tuesday with the Texas Ethics Commission his report for fundraising from Nov. 7 when he first filed papers indicating he intends to seek statewide office through the end of the year, as required by law.

Nearly two-thirds of his total came from Texas, according to the report. Out-of-state contributions accounted for 35 percent, with Florida his second-biggest contributor state. Florida accounted for 26 percent of Bush’s total, largely he product of a letter in November from Jeb Bush to a network of political donors in the Sunshine State. In addition to support from George W. Bush, his other two uncles — Neal and Marvin Bush – each gave $1,000 and his grandfather, former president George H.W. Bush contributed $5000. Others in the family included $2,000 from cousin Jonathan Bush, an executive with Aetna Healthcare in Massachusetts, and $500 uncle Jonathan Bush of Connecticut. State law does not limit campaign contributions in Texas and Bush’s average donation was $3,008, fueled in large part by several high-dollar donations from family friends and political backers with a history of supporting George W. Bush for governor and the White House.. Dallas waste-disposal owner Harold Simmons gave $50,000, Houston homebuilder Bob and wife Doylene Perry gave $65,000, Midland oilman and one-time gubernatorial candidate Clayton Williams gave $25,000 and Dallas education entrepreneur Randy Best gave $50,000.
