My wife is in the states now with greencard and ss card. Immigration did not give the married name on her greencard even though I had it on all the forms. Sosial security office had to use maiden name since that was on greencard. Can I change this with the SS office??? Help line says yes but the last time I was there they said she needed the married name on greencard in order to do it. Some say an I-90 will need to be filed, changing name on GC and then SS change would be next. How would she travel back and forth if names dont match between GC and foreign passport?

ANYBODY WITH NAME CHANGING EXPEIENCE!!!

For the GC you can spend the money on the I-90 and change the name now or wait until you have to file removal of conditions (ROC) on the GC and do the name change then. For the SSA, you need to take in a valid ID, poof of age, and a name change document like the Marriage Certificate. If they refuse ask for a supervisor. Record the names, date, local office, time of day and what they say to you and if you do not get the name changed e-mail the main SSA office on their website and explain the situation. If they say the GC or other immigration documents must have the name changed you could politely ask them, "How does a USC change their name on the SSC?" The answer is the same as you do. You go to the local office and show them the card you have and the Marriage Certificate and ask to have the name changed. Show them your passport for ID and explain that you have not gotten that changed yet. Show them the GC as a last resort. Your GC name does not need to be changed first.

For traveling with the maiden name in the passport and married name on the GC you carry with you a certified copy of your Marriage Certificate so the airline employees will understand that you are the same person and allow you to board the airplane to return to the US. Once in the US, you show the GC and they will allow you to enter (assuming you have not violated any of the LPR requirements--only USC are guaranteed entry as it is their country of domicile).

Good luck,

Dave
