Hi All,

Please i will like a confirmation on the actual birth certificate required. As the beneficiary, the birth certificate i have is the one given at birth, but i came across a review here on VJ that suggested an UNABRIDGED BIRTH CERTIFICATE and also another review that suggested a FORMAL /LONG BIRTH CERTIFICATE. Am kinda confused is it that i have to get a more formal birth certificate?

Secondly, do i need to go for the interview with my fiance's(the petitioner)original birth certificate as well?

Thanks so much.

A copy of your passport's identity page will prove you're a citizen and can file a K-1 visa. USCIS doesn't like the birth certificates my state issues today, so it was my only option to. They actually sent an RFE demanding a long birth certificate, which my state no longer issues.

It appears you're going through the Nigerian embassy, you should follow the regional forum for the issues you're going to face. Its not an easy embassy to get a K-1 approved.

From what I have read on this site, you are not required to accompany your fiance to his interview. You may go to the Embassy with your Fiance in Lagos, but they will not allow you inside.

Looks like I read the question wrong. Sorry about that. I see that you were asking if you need to bring his original birth certificate to the interview (not him)LOL. I really don't know the answer to that. For the IR-1/CR-1 process, the petitioner sends his original birth certificate in with the initial packet to the USCIS, so they already have it at the Embassy at interview time.

I think the person asking the question is the beneficiary, right? (People are answering you as if you are the petitioner. But maybe I'm the one reading it wrong.) And you want to know what is the correct Nigerian birth certificate to take to your interview? And also asking if your petitioner needs to mail you their original birth certificate to take with you. I don't know what forum you posted this in because I'm reading it from the portal I belong to but you need answers from people going through the Lagos embassy in Nigeria.

There are 2 common forms of birth certificates available the "short" one will give baby name , date of birth, place of birth and usually the parents names

The long one that immigration wants will also include some/most/all of the following Parents date of birth or age, parents full name( includung mothers maiden name), parents place of birth

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

u need to go to the national population commission office in your state of birth and tell them u want a birth certificate for the embassy, take the birth certificate u have have as proof. u will need to take an affidavit of your age declaration from the court and 2 passport photographs, u will also need to pay some money to get it processed. I paid N3,500 but i dont know if this is the same for other states. He needs to go and find out. Any other birth certificate will be acceptable elsewhere but will not be acceptable at the embassy. For ur interview, u won't be needing the petitioner's original birth certificate. But i will advise that u read the interview "Reviews" at the top (right hand) corner of the visa journey page to gain experience from other people's interviews. I hope this helps. I wish u the very best!
