This doc botched his explanation.

With a 'typical rape' whether ovulating or not, the female doesn't orgasm and her cervix won't dip and 'scoop up' the seminal fluid into her body and help out the little critters with an easy ride to her egg(s). Hence her chances of becoming pregnant decreases but it still happens. Fright/pain is the 'stress' you're talking about that prevents the cervix from dipping and not help accommodate one of the results of rape.

It seems that it's not just Republican politicians who have a problem with what they meant to say.

Exactly. All the man said was that it can decrease the chance. Once again I am pro choice, but I also don't support accusing somebody of something the did not say.

Finally a ray of sanity in this sea of stupidity.

I'd rather they keep it alive. The more, the better.

I agree, keep the crazies out in the open where we can see them! LOL As a woman I can't imagine having a man at the other end of my exam table that can even "partly" try to defend someone as creepy as Todd Akin. headbonk.gif

there are a multitude of factors that must align perfectly for conception to occur. akin and now this guy, question the "legitimacy" ~32,000 rape victims who conceive via rape. within the context of these gop assertions, if they got pregnant - how come their body didn't respond properly to the stress of the rape? maybe they weren't actually too stressed about it? maybe they wanted it? maybe they didn't - but god did and so he trumped the shut down!

not being fairly quoted? interesting take.

He did not question the legitimacy of anything he said ---Rape can and often does result in pregnancy..

I will keep repeating the truth until maybe it sinks in

Now you know why. You didn't bring it.

I guess if orgasm leads to pregnancy you have never had to worry about birth control.

maybe that's why you have to keep repeating yourself, you aren't making sense.

ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) Statement on Rape and Pregnancy

August 20, 2012

Washington, DC — Recent remarks by a member of the US House of Representatives suggesting that "women who are victims of 'legitimate rape' rarely get pregnant" are medically inaccurate, offensive, and dangerous.

Each year in the US, 10,000–15,000 abortions occur among women whose pregnancies are a result of reported rape or incest. An unknown number of pregnancies resulting from rape are carried to term. There is absolutely no veracity to the claim that "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down." A woman who is raped has no control over ovulation, fertilization, or implantation of a fertilized egg (ie, pregnancy). To suggest otherwise contradicts basic biological truths.

Any person forced to submit to sexual intercourse against his or her will is the victim of rape, a heinous crime. There are no varying degrees of rape. To suggest otherwise is inaccurate and insulting and minimizes the serious physical and psychological repercussions for all victims of rape.

correct and that is why Gingery said women can and often do get pregnant from rape and I do not support akin.

You can't comprehend basic thought...

I can. And when you look at Akin's comments in the context of his Congressional record, these comments are indefensible. They are not right. Not in part and not as a whole. They are wrong. Plain and simple.

This was posted earlier. See the bold part. That's all there is to it.

I am pro-choice. I am all for abortion regardless of rape, and certainly support it in the case of rape. I think Akin is an idot and don't support his view points at all.

I know, I know and Good.

The guy plainly said rape can and does result in pregnancy, that he does not support Akin's at all, but that from a medical standpoint it can make conception less likely. That is a medical fact.

See above. The ACOG disagrees.

Yes, it is. And Gingery suggests that Akin's comments are partially right - medically - and that it's not really horrible to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate rape. The ACOG clearly came out with a statement disagreeing on the former and any decent human being would hopefully disagree on the latter. Look, he's a Congressman from Georgia and not really my business. There are crazier people in the same body - Louie Gohmert comes to mind.

Don't get me wrong, I want the Republicans to re-open this discussion just as often as they can. Keep having it bubble up. It's good stuff. Statements and idiocy of this caliber is why Democrats could not only hold on to the Senate but actually broaden their majority there once again. And they're gaining in the House too. So I say, keep it coming!

The idea that a woman's body will not conceive from rape is medieval. Literally. As in 13th century medieval. This has been proven WRONG. Anyone who suggests that that indeed is still the case needs to give their head a shake. I don't care if they are a doctor, or how long they have been a doctor.

Some doctors are stupid. Some are even republicans!
