I'm posting this as an update for you guys, but also if someone does an advanced search they can find the information that I had a hard time finding right away. My husband got his Texas Driver's License on Wednesday April 10, 2013. He came on a K-1 visa and what I learned along the way was, at least in Texas, he needed his EAD work authorization card in order to apply for his license. He got that on April 1st, we went to the DPS on the 3rd with all the required documents and he was able to take his written test. No appointment for that. Paid $25 for a full license (no learner's permit) that covers the cost of the license and road test. He passed the test and they said we could take the road test anywhere in Texas because their office had a long wait. You can schedule road tests online for most offices from the DPS website using the DL/ID number on your payment receipt so I checked all over the state and nothing for 2-3 weeks away and a long drive for us. Finally, I noticed a canceled appointment for an office in our area on the 10th and immediately booked it. We checked in an hour before the road test and they just made sure he had insurance to drive the car and that was it. Nothing else required.

I think waiting to schedule helped because you can't have more than one appointment scheduled. Since I don't have a teenager and I can't remember what I did when I was, I had to call DPS several times, searched on here and googled a lot just to get this basic information on how and when to get a Texas DL for my husband.

This is just our experience and what I was told by DPS. Other than multiple calls to ask simple questions, it was not a difficult process and we had no issues.

So, I made it to Canada and am here now and we had a mini panic attack. I've got my Canadian passport, my EAD/AP combo card, and a copy of my marriage certificate since my name changed but I didn't bring an original certified marriage certificate. AGHHH do you think this will pose a problem for re -entry since my name doesn't match? Do they need the embossed marriage certificate or is a copy good enough? I have a colour photocopy of both sides. I have a WA DL in my new name if it helps for ID purposes. I'm just obsessively worrying now. On a positive note we gave my parents the biggest surprise ever. Now if only I can stop worrying about going back Sunday.

Freaking out a lttle here...

Just flew from Maui to Oahu.

I have my passport, for photo ID, but forgot my EAD card; interview is Tuesday.

Do I need it ? It's the only photo ID with my married name.

My husband is meeting me at our hotel in a few hours. He's on a plane right now.

Am I over reacting?

I can't tell him. I feel so stupid! He reminded me to bring it, so. I could check into the hotel.

That was embarasing! No photo ID with married name. I got into our room okay...lol.

Well, technically, the letter doesn't specify married or maiden name.

Please.... please advise.

He gets here in...3 hours. ....

Holding back tears of frustration .

Just wanted to let you all know that I got back into the USA with my new EAD/AP card today after speaking the weekend visiting my parents and family in Canada. Ironically with all my obsessive worrying, they didn't even ask to see the copy of the marriage certificate even though the names don't match. I wonder if it's because in my K1 visa it lists the name of my fiance who is now my husband so it matches up. I went into secondary to import my car and ended up getting the same guy who processed our K1 visa. We were both kind of worried about that happening since he had given us a hard time back then, but he imported the car without issues and seemed to be having a slightly better day this time.

And to the Seattle port of entry officer that told me I couldn't import my car without a greencard - TAKE THAT! I know you don't want to listen to a non-US citizen tell you you were wrong, but guess what - you were wrong. I imported it without a greencard, like I should have been able to all along.

I'm sure you'll be fine! You have the marriage certificate that says your married name right (they should have it anyway!) - they didn't ask to see my EAD.

Hey CANbirdUSman,

Sorry to hear about your stress. I hate to bring it up but I have heard people say you have to hand in your EAD/AP card in order to get your greencard? Does anyone else recall reading that somewhere?

I don't think it's a must, I had my EAD/AP with me and I wasn't asked to hand it in. I wasn't approved on the spot, but 1hr later. Still I don't think it's compulsory to hand it back, otherwise they would ask to those ppl who wheren't approved immediately to send it back somewhere.

If I were CANbirdUSman, and was asked to hand it in, I'd simply say I forgot it at home.

And they do not list it on things to bring.

Now that I'm thinking a bit more clearly, I think I read , you hang onto it, because you may need it to look for work . Right?

Otherwise if it was a critically thing to bring they'd ask for it.

Saying this makes me feel better...lol....

Just relax, go shopping at Oahu Mall - retail therapy works wonders for stress. You will do fine, and if they ask, just say it was on your letter, so I did not bring it.
