Hello all,

I enter the US on a K-1 Visa and my AOS was recently approved and today received my GC in the mail ...

What I am wondering is if I go to the SSA and ask to get the DHS authorization stipulation removed from my SSN card will they take my existing card ... Basically will I be without a card until I get the new card ??

I am starting a new job on Friday and they will need to see the SSN card ... So is it just better to get that removed down the road in a few weeks or months ?? Having that on my card doesn't really mean anything except make people ask questions right ??

If the DHS stipulation you are talking about is only authorized to work with DHS authorization or something like that -- that will stay on your SS card until you become a citizen. I entered on a GC, and my SS card had a restriction on it, and now my new one doesn't :)

I think this was what you were asking... if not, please explain more, or maybe someone else knows.

Sorry if I didn't explain it good enough ... Yes my social security card currently says "Valid for work only with DHS authorization" ...

You can't remove this until you become a citizen ?? I kind of thought that you can get this removed once you get your green card ...

That's exactly what mine said (except it said INS) :) The Green Card is what shows that you have DHS work authorization, so your SSN and Green Card together are all you need.

You can't remove this until you become a citizen ?? I kind of thought that you can get this removed once you get your green card ...

You can remove it as soon as you are a PR. There are several benefits to doing so---one being: you may not always want to use your Green Card as an employment document.

With an unrestricted SS card and a driver's licence, you're hired.

mdyoung is kind enough to post the instructions here, including what NOT to take with you (your old card ;) )

Oh well, it's probably b/c I'm in Kentucky and all of the local services seem confused by dealing with immigrants :)

When I went to the SSA to get the restricitions removed I was instructed to fill out a new application and check off that I already had a SSN. They didn't ask to see my original card, I only showed it to them to explain what I needed to return. The officer told me I could put my card away - so I left with it and was told to destroy the old one once my new one arrived. The interesting thing that happend was when the officer was "plugging in" all of my info, he told me that USCIS hadn't cleared me in the system, eventhough I already have had my PR for over a month. He told me it takes awhile for all of the systems to match.

Long story short, I got my unrestricted card yesterday...less than 4 weeks after I applied for the new card.

For everyone's benefit...

CF-1 means you are a Permanent Resident with Conditions and you adjusted from Fiance. A PR with conditions is a Permanent Resident nonetheless. All of your future countdowns start from that 'resident since' date on your card---removing conditions and naturalization.

Just kind of late getting on the computer. Came home from work and didn't even eat dinner and went to vote. Right from there took daughter to soccer clinic. Then came home to deal with leaking shower spray hose and trip to Home Depot. 10:00 p.m. I finally ate. After all that I'm here to answer questions and thanks for saving that thread, my right index finger is too tired to type. LOL

I’m in the exactly same boat; came in on a K-1, just got my Green Card and I start a new job on Monday  . I wanted the notation removed from my SS card I also didn’t want them to take my card. So following good advice obtained here a number of weeks ago.. I didn’t take my card to the SSA office, told them I never carry it with me  . Although I had quite a mission to begin with trying to get the woman at the SSA office to understand that I was indeed entitled to an unrestricted card as a Permanent Resident.

My advice is, if you haven’t done so.. make a print out! I made a print out of this.. I believe I got the information from mdyoung a few posts ago. It’s hard for a SSA employee to argue with their own rules in black and white!

Good Luck! :D

I was just reading the posts from the last few days and saw this...I don't know if my input helps but my husband got his GC Friday and we went to the SS office Monday to order a new card without the DHS restriction printed on it, which is what the nice man at the other end of the toll free SS line said to do. When we were there, we were sure to ask first if he can keep his first card for work before the new one arrives and the girl said it wasn't a problem but to be sure to "shred" it after the new one gets here.

As far as the SS workers in Kentucky go, INSIST that you know what you're doing and ask to speak to a supervisor or something. You have the right to an unrestricted SS card as a Permanent Resident.
