Clinics ask how O'Reilly got abortion records

TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) -- Two abortion clinics asked the state's highest court Monday to investigate Attorney General Phill Kline and Fox television's Bill O'Reilly over O'Reilly's statements that he had information from Kansas abortion records.

A Kline spokeswoman called the move "a political ploy."

The clinics' attorneys want the Kansas Supreme Court to seize records that Kline, an outspoken abortion opponent, obtained on 90 of the clinics' patients.

Kline received edited versions of the records from a district judge on October 24 after arguing he wanted to review the records for evidence of possible crimes including rape and illegal abortions.

The attorneys asked the court to appoint a special prosecutor to determine if O'Reilly's information came from the records turned over to Kline.

O'Reilly said Friday on his show "The O'Reilly Factor" that an inside source gave him information that a doctor at one of the clinics, George Tiller, had performed late-term abortions because patients were depressed. O'Reilly deemed it "executing babies."

Kline spokeswoman Sherriene Jones has said the attorney general doesn't know how O'Reilly obtained the information.

David Tabacoff, executive producer of "The O'Reilly Factor," issued a statement saying, "We stand by our story."

The two clinics requesting the investigation are Tiller's Wichita clinic and a Planned Parenthood-run clinic in Overland Park. Tiller, one of the few U.S. doctors to perform late-term abortions, has been targeted by protesters for years, his clinic was bombed in 1985 and he was shot by a protester in 1993.

The clinics' request for an investigation was the second in a week targeting the attorney general.

On Wednesday, former Attorney General Bob Stephan, a Republican like Kline, asked the state Governmental Ethics Commission to examine Kline's fundraising and activities involving churches. Kline is running for a second term

He is an idiot.

Who is an idiot? Phill Kline or Bill O'Reilly?

Honestly, I agree with a number of things O'Reilly says, but...I don't -- and can't -- agree on this. I think abortion should be up to the parents*, not the government. If Republicans really stand by their motto of "limited government intervention" then they wouldn't be trying to use government to interfere with the rights of individuals.

* Notice I said "parents." That's because I believe an abortion is something that should be decided on by both the mother and the father. If the father is unavailable for whatever reason (like a number are today), then the decision should come down to the mother; otherwise, it should be a decision rendered by both partners.

Just curious.... at what point does a parent's right to kill their child end and a government can step in to stop it? When they're 21, 18, 16, 12?

If there is a HIPAA violation, that's very serious. If you're not sympathetic to abortion victims, think how you'd feel if your erectile dysfunction diagnosis was splattered all over the news without your consent.

Ah yes, Bill O'Reilly...bastion of journalist integrity!

I like his Malmedy quotes...he was erroneous, not once but TWICE on that one!

On October 28, 2005, O'Reilly falsely claimed, in an interview with Fox News Channel analyst General Wesley Clark, that U.S. troops committed the Malmedy massacre. O'Reilly stated "General, you need to look at the Malmedy massacre in World War Two, and the 82nd Airborne who did it." [1]. In actuality, it was the German Waffen-SS troops that massacred eighty-four surrendering American soldiers.

On May 30, 2006 O'Reilly again interviewed Wesley Clark. O'Reilly stated "In Malmedy, as you know, US Forces captured SS forces who had their hands in the air and they were unarmed and they shot them down. You know that. That's on the record and documented." Wesley Clark did not correct O'Reilly at any point during the interview. Media Matters for America claimed that Fox News later edited the transcripts of the conversation inserting the word "Normandy" where O'Reilly had said "Malmedy." O'Reilly was strongly denounced by MSNBC talk show host Keith Olbermann. [2] [1]

I don't agree with abortion in any form. No one should be allowed the decision to kill an unborn child. That is my personal opinion.

Regardless of opinions on abortion and the right to confidentiality of the patients in question, what was supposedly happening at the clinics, is illegal; and as such the correct thing was done by the whistle blower in making it known to an outside source. Imagine what would be still happening if someone hadn't blown the whistle on Dr Death.

I have no knowledge of any of the people in question, so therefore I do not have an opinion in that regard.

NY Times prints Top Secret info on front page and nothing happens. People up in arms over Bill O'Reilly having information from Kansas abortion records. No double standard there.

Ah yes, Bill O'Reilly...bastion of journalist integrity!

I wonder if some feel the same way about John Stewart and Keith Olbermann... or are they the smart and intelligent ones..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

You do realize, I hope, that Jon Stewart is a comedian who doesn't purport to be a journalist.
