Guns and Alcohol: Gun Owners Drink More and Take More Risks

It was a recent study by the British Medical Journal who gleaned the data. But why do you think 12 years would make the data obsolete? It still correlates to the number of gun homicides and alcohol. We know from drunk drivers that alcohol makes people do stupid sh!t. Why not make it a severe penalty if a gun owner is found intoxicated while in possession of a gun that they can't possess firearms for a period of time and make it permanent for repeat offenders? The NRA supports stiffer penalties for law breakers - this should be a noncontroversial issue.

To say demographics doesn't matter is simply being ignorant.

Throw some heroin and crack cocaine into the mix and the numbers skyrocket evemn more.

Funny how everybody knows what the problem is, where the problem is, and who is living there, but doesn't want to come out and say it. Liberals don't want to fix the mess they made, and continue to make the problems worse, because it keeps them in power.

Exactly. Why would anyone have a problem with taking away someone's gun when they decide to be stupid by carrying it while intoxicated? This is a no brainer. Punish the criminals and take away their guns.

We need to work within the bounds of the Second Amendment and try to attack the root of problem. If people want to ban firearms completely they need to start a movement to amend the Constitution. That will take decades and I doubt it would ever get enough steam to get past the talking stage. In the meantime, why not do what we can to change the social/economic situation in the high crime areas? Face it, even if all the responsible, law abiding gun owners gave up their guns, the undesirables will still have theirs and have no conscious about using them against innocent, unarmed people. And this goes well beyond the mass shootings. Most homicides are committed one at a time, not en mass.

I do not drink alcohol at all. Ever. Never have. I have never been intoxicated in my entire life. I had plenty to do with shooting/hunting/fishing/women.

I was not surveyed for this

Does Alla know about your history of shooting women? :wow:

It's the people that are living there as well, they share the blame. Some of them don't want better for themselves, others just accept what is there as the way of life. If you are lazy and want to live on the government, then they won't change themselves. It doensn't matter if you are black or white, because I've seen bad neighborhoods on both sides of the coin. You have urban hoods, and you have rural hoods. I've touched on this before but when you start getting into it, someone will call me a racist.

Blaming the problem on liberals, conservatives, Republicans, Democrats etc, is retarded. The problem exists. How do we fix it?

By getting to the root of the problem, I should have edited my post. Both sides, libs and servs have good ideas to bring to the table, problem is, if either side is too much to the left or right you are going to have problems. Some people can't work, health problems, disabilities, and such so there should be something for them, others that are too lazy to work shouldn't get assistance if they are able bodied. But until you put education, respect, and discipline back into the equation, you won't get far.

Coyote's I can relate with...we had lots of them back home, wolves I can relate with...we have them here...it's the dogs I can't relate with. They get these dogs and the dogs just run around and breed like rats making more dogs. The bulldogs here are the worst of the lot...American bulldogs and Pitt bulls but they have interbred so much it's hard to make out what some of these mutts are. They get that pack mentality and they start chasing down kids, other dogs, etc... to the point it's a pure danger. I had a few of these eskimo's come over and complain about their dog getting whacked (I leave them right where I shoot em) and I told them to go call the cops and see if they give a sh*t because I know I sure don't. That ends it right there.

Eskimos? I thought your area was Athabascan.

When do guns and booze mix? Fishing and hunting trips for starters. And if you don't shoot at least one road sign on your way to your favorite fishing spot then you failed.

Guns + alcohol? Around here it is called hunting season!

Education is the key. All of this is easy to say but so far has been hard to do. On this forum just as in Washington there is a lot of finger pointing on who did/said what. These problems exist and it doesn't matter who did what 40 years ago. Today is what matters and we need cooperation in Washington and in our own cities and towns to make a difference. You have made some very good points in this thread. And naming the demographics that are statistically responsible for the crime isn't being racist. It's fact. There are whites, blacks, Hispanics, Latino's Asian etc that fall into this category. Some commit a higher percentage of crime than others.

Yep. We protect the status quo hiding behind labels rather than isolate the problem. You can profile and be sensitive at the same time, if you are intelligent about it, but popular politics will have none of that. One side doesn't want to spend the money, and the other side doesn't want to lose major constituencies -- like the teacher's unions.
