Dears,

I got a job in Alaska, and moved here few months ago. I decided not to join my company health plans because it's expensive. The medium plan for family of 3 was around $850 per month, and I still have to pay $11,000 for deductibles before the insurance pays any cost (except for preventive visits, and some other minor issues).

Now I decided to purchase a health insurance on my own. I'm shopping online, but I may need a specific advice for Alaska. Everything here is different than the other states.

I tried to find the old fashion insurance where the insurance pays since day one (like all the insurance in most of countries), but I didn't find any.

So, the only way is the insurance with deductibles, where you pay from your pocket for certain amount (grands of bucks per year), then you pay like 20% after that.

Not only this, I went into some details, and I discovered that they don't cover any maternity cost!!! so if we want to get a baby, I have to pay it on my own. They cover only the complicated cases. what is the hell is this!!! What is wrong America.

I'm trying to convince myself that I understand something wrong, but their conditions are self explanatory.

I get relatively good income, but what is the use if I have to pay all of it, and more to cover my medical expenses, and getting a baby!!!

Any thoughts will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Thanks for your reply, they don't cover the maternity except for complications of pregnancy!!!

Alot of medical insurances doesn't cover maternity for some reason. Try looking at AFLAC. My daughter did and it covered maternity where her medical insurance did not. Plus look into HMOs that may be available where you are at. Alot of times the hospitals or medical centers around the area you live caters to certain HMOs so find out what they accept and see who is offering it to get an individual plan.

Good luck!!1

Up here in Alaska they rip us off with the insurance! We have blue cross blue shield at the moment, but I'm also shopping around for a new one. We pay a lot every month and don't get anything for it, at least that is how I feel. We get some free health check up which came in handy for the kids but looking back, had we just paid for those check ups on our own and skipped the insurance we would have saved some serious money....but we don't wanna be uninsured so...

I am pregnant now and you are right, there is not one single insurance up here that covers more than if something goes wrong at the actual delivery. We have decided to give birth at a birth center and pay ourselves, I managed to work out a deal with them so the whole thing will end up costing us $6000, and that is considered cheap up here.... In Sweden where I gave birth to our other two kids I paid $32 and $8. Now that is cheap ;-)

Please update on here if you find a price worthy insurance!

I'm sorry your insurance situation is looking grim. Recently before my husband switched companies we were looking at paying around $1600 a month. It was ridiculous and not affordable, but you don't want to NOT be covered, right?

The only thing I can suggest is looking for another job with better benefits or looking at your spouse's benefits through their job. Or you could look at medicaid if you are eligible.

I believe the benefits of a group plan are they cover you straight away and they HAVE to cover everything so if you needed major heart surgery and it was going to cost you $150,000 you know you will only be paying your out of pocket maximum and then then your company pays the rest.
