What constitutes a bad neighborhood? Poor people? They have the right to defend themselves too. Minorities? Ditto. Same right.

You don't have bad neighborhoods until you ACCEPT/LIVE WITH/TAKE FOR GRANTED/NORMALIZE unacceptable behavior in a neighborhood.

The crime rates / shootings / murder rates correspond to the above and nothing else. There is otherwise no, none, zero correlation between gun ownership rates and murder rates.

We can otherwise play "fun with numbers" all day

The thing missing here is context. No one is saying that people in bad neighborhoods don't have a right to defend themselves. What I am saying is if you give everyone in a bad neighborhood guns, you will have more murders. Drugs, gangs, poor quality of life, that constitutes a bad neighborhood. I've been places that are poor but had no violent crime. Why? Because people living there were happy with what they had. You listed placed that have high crime and murder rates. Do you think giving everyone a gun would solve that problem? I still find it funny that in those neighborhoods the people have zero violent crime have the most weapons.

I've been places that are poor BUT if you are caught dealing drugs you either spend your life in a prison where if someone in your family doesnt feed you - you starve or you get your scrawny neck put on a block and get your head removed. Not here. We just accept it and tolerate it as background behavior and the more of it that gets accepted the worse the neighborhood.

Though there is no relationship between number of guns/gun ownership rates and crime. There is a startling relationship between rates of dependence on public programs and crime.

Perhaps people who can't take care of themselves should not be trusted to own or use firearms.

I think religion is related to crime on some level. Traveling around the world I noticed that Catholic countries seemed to have alot of violent crime. Philippines, Guatemala, Mexico. When you walk into McDonalds in those countries there's security armed with shotguns etc. I'm talking strictly crime. I'm not talking some nut wanting saw your head off with a dull drywall saw because you're the wrong religion. I don't know if it's directly related, just an observation I made. Thailand, India, even Pakistan I felt safe from your everyday crime. Although the Marriott I used to stay at in Islamabad is now a pile of rocks because some Islamist nuts blew it up.

Maybe I'm off base, just an observation.
