I was wondering that too. If no version of it passes, I assume that cases filed prior to 1/1/13 are grandfathered in.

Is it already illegal in this country to commit an act of violence against another person whether it be man or woman?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

And that adds to what I said how? Vanessa and I were pondering what will happen to immigrants who filed for AOS under VAWA. As far as I know, without VAWA this becomes impossible if the immigrant is a victim of spousal violence prior to AOS. The violence becomes like any other -- if an immigrant who is out of status (pre-completion of AOS) gets beat up in the street by strangers, that doesn't entitle him or her to AOS. Would you prefer that any immigrant be able to get AOS on the basis of getting roughed up by anyone? Or would you deny it to all regardless of the source of the violence?

It's too easy to claim spousal abuse. Deport ASAP!

I'm a white male and the GOP is certainly not making any attempt to cling to me. They make every effort to keep me away. And it works, too. :hehe:

That's what I never understood about Libs. Instead of enforcing the existing laws on the books they want to make new laws.

Because the law doesn't quite work for people of color the same way it does for you.

Do you really think that is still true ? I admit there as a time in the not so distant past, but from the things I see, we go out of our way to make sure we error on the side of an abudance of caution when dealing with minorities. Maybe we are both conditioned to some degree.

In some cases yes. I'll agree with you that it's gotten better with time. But we still have a ways to go, espically when things like Trayvon Martin still happen. Now people on this website and in life really believe that there was justification to it and they stick to their guns about it(no pun intened). And before now I couldn't fathom why they can't see it they way I do. One of my co-workers broke it down for me so simply. A couple of weeks ago when this was a hot topic Bad daddy asked why POTUS, Al Sharpton, and a few other in the spotlight Black Americans got involved. The answer is this, because if you are black, you could be Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis, and countless others that have died for being the wrong skin color.

Think about it, most mass killing and shooting deaths are carried out by white males,(VA techa and DC sniper are two exceptions) but when will we ever profile white males? Never.

People like to ignore this fact for the most part. White people who do these crimes are never called thugs. They are simply mentally ill.

It's a pretty odd double standard. People did whatever they could to make Trayvon Martin look like a thug. Pictures of him in hoodies, his school reputation, etc ... anything to make it look like this kid was worth killing.

Yes these guys who go around shooting kids and shooting their families are generally white males and nobody ever tries to tarnish THEIR reputation. They're always just sick, or the product of bad family life, or the product of playing too many video games.

It's a strange world we live in when we crucify a victim for his skin color but make excuses for the murderers for theirs.

Trayvon Martin was a thug. Did you see the hoodie he was wearing? Scary.

Excuse me, I just peed my pants.

I know you're joking but that's the mind frame of most people that have issues with people of color. But as a black man, I adonish my own people for acting like buffoons, and giving in to such foolish behavior. We have such a negative image, it's like trying to nail Jello to a wall when you try to rise above it. Every black child who has decent parents gets the talk, you know you have 2 strikes against you from birth(black, male or female), don't give them a third. Some listen, most don't.

the violence against 'women' act is a sexist law. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Any law the singles out a certain 'group' is discriminatory in nature.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

-Assault is assault

-Murder is murder

-Theft is theft

It doesn't matter what your reason was, who it was against, etc.. If you want the punishment for something to be 10 years, make it 10 years across the board. Stop trying to treat things differently than what they are.
