I signed up for that last one out of curiousity....

I have a question and I hope you don't take it the wrong way but I saw something on that site about sufism.... it's not sufi right?

One of the teachers on the site is a scholar of hadith, shafi'i and hanafi jurisprudence, usul al-fiqh and aqeedah, as well as a sheikh in the Shadhili order of tasawwuf. Sheikh Nuh is a stickler when it comes to adhering to Islam. In fact, before someone can become on of Sheikh Nuh's mureeds, they need to be well versed in fiqh and whatnot, give up television and adhere to a very strict dress code (kufis, long tunics, baggy pants for the men, niqab for women, neutral colors for both). Although I'm a sufi asperant (much to my husband's dismay), I'm definately not at that level in my islam and iman to take that much of a plunge yet.

Sunnipath's approach to sufism is within the framework of traditionally taught islam. They accept certain tariqahs and believe tasawwuf is a part of traditional islam. It isn't the kind of sufism where you don't follow any rules, where you don't have to be a muslim to be a sufi. Those who practice tasawwuf are first and foremost sunnis, then hanafis, shafi'is, malikis and hanbalis, and then members of a tariqa.

If you find something objectionable in the course materials, then take the good that you find, and leave what you find objectionable. However, you might find their approach to tasawwuf refreshing ;)

Also, to add -

The last course is based on an excellent book by Imam al Ghazali, one of my favorite islamic scholars in all of history. He was a member of a tariqa. If you seek to learn from those who came before, you will run into people who have practiced sufism.

Aqeedah tends to be pretty uncontroversial though. I don't remember anything that would be objectionable in that course. Salafis and Sufis usually agree on aqeedah.
