Heads up to those of you moving in 2013.

Bank of America will set you up with a Bank Account before you get a Social Security Card, I believe there the only bank that does it. You can even set it up if your just visiting your fiance. They also allow free withdrawals from Barclays cash machines when you visit home.

Progressive appear to be the only insurance company that will cover drivers with a non US license and they don't over charge. Our insurance actually wen't down by $40 per month when I was added because we our married. When I get a US license it will be even cheaper.

Progressive is great and has very low premiums. They insured my husband with his non-US license before he had his license here, and they added him as a driver on the policy for only an additional $53 per 12 month period. They are an easy, no hassle way to go and you can get a very accurate quote online.

I also suggest asking the agent who insures your spouse. Not sure about every state, but in general in the US, the car is insured, not the person. That's a different concept from the UK and something hard to get your head around when first coming here.

My car is covered by State Farm as long as I gave that person permission to drive it. My agent suggested we wait until my husband got a license to add him as a regular driver, just to make it easier to satisfy their software. He stated that the car was covered if my husband had an accident before his name was added to the policy or he had a US license. Our premium did not increase by adding him. Had he been under 25, it would have.

My son-in-law wrecked my car and it was fixed with no problems even though he was not named on the policy, so ask the agent. Some of those online only insurers are maybe not as flexible, just like trying to open a bank account online often fails, but is successful when you walk in the bank to do it.

What's the use of having insurance without a license? Many states do not allow one to drive on a foreign driver license once residency has been established in that state. By moving here on a K1 Visa, marrying and living with your resident spouse, you have indeed established residency.

Every State has a Grace Period, and every State has different rules. It was not a problem in CO for me, but things may have changed.

Also did not use Progressive or BoA. I have seen it mentioned that BoA is the best bet if you are undocumented.
