Just a bit of information for Canadians renewing their passports from the US. I know that Passport Canada is really picky about photographs and that the majority of passport application rejections from the US are related to improper or poor quality passport photographs. I just had mine done at the Sear's Portrait Studio - $19 for 4 identical photographs (you only need 2). They have a machine that is all set up to do Canadian style passports so everything is right - the exterior size, the interior dimensions, the placement of the head, the lack of shadows - everything. The photographer was also very aware of the Canadian criteria - no smiling, no glare, writing the name of the studio and the date on the back, and the photos are guaranteed. If Passport Canada doesn't accept them, they will redo them at no cost. The photos look really good (the subject matter doesn't look so good, hehehe) so I don't anticipate any problems with them being accepted.

Interesting side detail - she also said that Canada and the Dominican Republic are the most fussy about the details of photographs - more than any of the other countries for which she has taken passport photos. She told the story of one gentleman who was bald and had a shiny head - it took 3 times - and in the end, make up and powder to subdue the shine - before the passport office accepted the photos (the first time too much glare from his head; the second time - without flash - no glare from the head but too dark; the third time, with his head shine subdued by make up and powder, worked).

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Haha Kathryn! I told my husband and he laughed and was like, "So wait - in order to get an accurate picture representing what he looks like, he had to wear makeup to disguise what he looked like?" :D

LOL! I noticed on the form as well that it says don't do anything to change the appearance! The woman said it was just enough of a matte finish make up powder that didn't change the colour or anything - just dulled down the shine :D.

Can you imagine if they stopped letting us wear makeup in our photos? They already look like prisoner photos since they won’t let us smile

I was so pissed I renewed my passport (US) This summer and the lady wouldn't take the picture if I smiled.

It is NOT against the rules on the US passports and I even showed her my passport with a smile in it.

But she wouldn't do it >=[

Now I have the WORST picture ever and these swirly lines go over my closed mouth and makes it look like my lips are all weird. BLAH
