My Passport doesn't expire until 2014. i have been reading about the new fees they are going to be bringing in and have a question. I gained US citizenship and will get my US passport done next week. I'm trying to decide what to do when my canadian one expires. Will there be any penalty for letting it expire if I decide to renew it later?

I'm kinda pissed that they would treat us like this just because we live outside of Canada.

Could renew it when u go back to Canada!

You can Enter Canada on a USA passport with no problems(as a Cdn citizen). Many let their Cdn passport expire.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

If you have dual citizenship it is just a good idea to maintain a passport for both countries. The biggest two benefits I can see is that sometimes travel to a foreign country will be easier with a Canadian passport than an US passport with regards to visa requirements, and if you run into problems overseas, with proof of citizenship in both countries, you can seek assistance from Consulates and Embassies of either the US or Canada, whichever turns out to be the easiest or closest. Depending on where you are when you need assistance, that may be a significant benefit.

Also, right now, Canada does not require proof of citizenship to enter Canada but you never know when some politician will decide that Canada needs to be more like the US with regards to border security and require Canadians re-entering Canada to show Canadian passports. (if, for example, Canada also adopts the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative).

So, while there are no real problems right now with not renewing your Canadian passport when it expires, still, it is a good idea to 'be prepared' if necessary.

I am a dual citizen and will be renewing my Canadian passport before it expires early in 2013. I am just glad they have made the process easier to renew a Canadian passport from the US. I had to get a guarantor with a Canadian passport last time I renewed my passport and that meant sending the application to Canada for my Dad to sign, and then him sending it all back to me (where it got lost in the priority mail for 5 weeks!) just to turn around and send it back to Canada with all of the attachments. Much simpler, now.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Plus with Canadian citizenships, people have found problems if they have had certain convictions. I know in Canada having a DUI is a felony which is in-admissible into Canada. Using just a US passport and having a DUI will prevent you from entering. Having the Canadian passport will not. There are other crimes too I believe that this also applies too, but the later one is one that I hear about quite a bit on boards.

Another thing is it's generally easier to pass through security with that nations passport. I use both now when travelling to Canada as I hate having my US passport filled up with Canada stamps, so I just use the Canadian one. After years of just using my US passport, I find the process entering into Canada easier with the Canadian passport.

These of course are in addition to what others have already said above, but it's always good to have both as an option for whatever reason.

The downfall is that the Canadian passport is only good for 5 years compared to 10 years for the US one...

While the fee is still ridiculous for filing outside of canada, the new price increase reflects the year change appropriately.

I feel the fee for people in the US should be lower than those outside of the continent entirely, however, my opinion matters not.

This may be a stupid question, but are the additional fees for filing outside of Canada only applied if it is being sent to your address abroad? If we go and file in person and arrange to pick it up are the additional fees waived? I usually file in person at the Toronto office so I know for sure they have what they need.

if you apply in person and arrange for pick or have it mailed to somewhere in Canada you won't be charged the extra fee..

Thanks for all your reasons for renewing. I still have a few years to decide. As I no longer have any family left alive in Canada anymore its harder to decide weather to renew or not. Sure I have a few friends back home, but most of them have also left Canada. Anyways Thanks.

Pickup costs an extra $10 over mailing. This was last week, not sure if that will be going up in Jun or not.

Hey, so my passport expires on July 7th. It is in my maiden name.

I'd like to get a new 10-year passport in my married name but I'm worried about a few things:

-Do I have to wait until July 1st (just 6 days before mine expires) to file to be eligible?

-I've filed to remove the conditions on my residency and I'm reticent to send my green card anywhere until that goes through

I don't have a guarantor here to sign the non-simplified application so I'd have to go to the consulate and fill out the Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor. Can they "certify/sign" copies of original documents as well?(green card, birth certificate, etc.) I'm really hesitant to send anything that important by courier. Hell, even Air Canada failed to get my cats on my same flight when I POE'd! You'd be nervous, too!

Thanks!
