It could also be that they called the "Information" Line (aka Misinformation line) for USCIS as well rather than have a direct line to a real immigration officer. That sounds like the sort of comment the Call Center employees give out. A real immigration officer would have known better.

Wow this is annoying. I went through something similar. I had the one year extension letter and the DMV person would only extend my DL for 5 months. So back I go 5 months later with the same letter and the DMV person said she had no authorization to extend me DL and she would have to fax it to USCIS. Ummm ... ok. I was very polite and took her name (I told her in case I had to come back). A week later I received an extended drivers license. Phew but annoying.

Just take names with all the DMV. Document everything.

Update: I went to a different branch in the city and renewed it in 10 mins, no questions asked! Thanks everyone for your input!

Might I suggest you put in a formal complaint about the other office? It might save someone else hassles in the future!
