Nigerians need transit visas for many stopover countries. Sometimes it depends on if you have only a visa or a greencard. Reading the immigrsation portal for Spain it seems you will need a transit visa. visa requirements

These are usually cheap and issued quickly

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Dot and Nat, thank you for the info... Did you mean you called to see if it was ready on the 18th and they confirmed it was ready and on the 19th you went to pick it up? I just do not want to call but to wait on the date I was told it would be ready... Thank you again for sharing and congrats!

Answer is No for most countries.

The rules are that, when the travelling passenger is NOT leaving the confined connecting area of the airport, you do not need a transit visa. I would interpret this to mean that when you are not leaving the airport and stepping out, you are fine.

The reason why some countries, and they are in the minority instituted the rule of getting a transit visa was that in the past some passengers will get a visa for Country A. But their actual intentions are to 'sneak' and stay in Country B. So these passengers get iteneraries with Country B as their transit/connecting flight destinations. Unbeknownst to immigration and CBP in Country B, the passenger(s) 'sneaks' around security checks and end up staying in Country B. It has happened many many times before and there has been lots of stories reported like that. This is the reason why a few countries lately require transit and connecting visas. For instance, office had to travel to Islamabad Pakistan for work last year. Our itenerary had connecting flights through UAE. Our travel office advised that we get transit visas for UAE. We sent our passports in for the visas issued before our trip. We had an 8hr layover in UAE, so all passengers in first-class were escorted to a waiting van and sent to this beautiful layover area. They served us, gave us everything we needed including a place to take a knap! In the end, no one asked us if we had a transit visas and in fact we didn't need such visas at after-all!

So long story short; you do not need transit/connecting visas for most countries. However, you will be well advised to check with the country you will be making that stop in before you show up.

Goodluck on your journey!

For EU countries (Spain is one) you do NOT need a transit visa provided you do not stop in MORE THAN ONE EU country and provided your connection is less than 24 hours and provided you remain in the secure area of the airport. Sounds like you are OK.

IF you were going to Spain and then had another stop in Belgium, for example, then to the USA you would need a transit visa.

I made sure my husband (at the time fiance) did not land until he hit American soil. I was afraid of any problems. I hope it turns out ok for you.
