I've read previously that if you pass your citizenship test the day of your interview, you can sometimes be sworn in as a citizen the same or next day. Is that accurate? My father's health is in severe decline and I am anxious to get to Australia to see him before he passes. Do you always have to wait for an oath ceremony months afterwards, or is it possible to be sworn in within a few days of passing your test/interview?

Thanks.

Depends on your local office and also on what time of day your appointment is.

Bear in mind you can't travel without the US passport if you take the Oath, so either pay for expedited same day service, or postpone the Oath until after you have visited Australia.

I haven't looked at your timeline but perhaps you could request an expedite based on your fathers health?

Thanks for your reply. My interview/appointment is early in the AM, I think it's around 7:30-8:00-ish. Can I ask the interviewing officer about expediting my oath (once I've passed, of course)?

I would. Take evidence of your fathers declining health and ask for it. You may even be able to do it same day. **fingers crossed** for you.

Have you looked at the process for the passport? I understand there are some booths at the ceremony but Im not sure if you can expedite there. I was reading some people can get them same day, I think Brother Hezekial did it that way. If you have the forms all ready to go, and whatever else you need it'll make it quicker of course and less stressful.

Good luck!

Usually same day oaths are offered to the early birds. Bear in mind, that you could only be accomodated, if your local office administers same day oaths, otherwise, despite being a valid emergency, if same day oaths are not held in your local office, they can't help you. Good Luck!

You can also request that your ceremony be delayed until you have been able to return from Australia, since you will need to have a valid US passport on which to travel once you take your oath ceremony and there may be delays in getting that processed. USCIS can be very accommodating with citizenship ceremonies and since time appears to be of the essence here, I would not worry about taking your oath before you go but ask them to schedule you for your oath ceremony after you have had a chance to go home and see your father. You can certainly bring the proof of his condition with you, but I don't think they would have a problem with that request. In that situation, at your oath ceremony, you would just update the information on file to reflect the amount of time you were out of the US. So, since you are a valid green card holder and can travel safely on your Australian passport with your green card, don't worry about getting your US citizenship before you go home and see your father.

I am sorry to hear about your Dad.

Chicago (and most cities, and definitely most big cities) do not do same day oath. I understand that everyone is anxious about this and asks themselves this, but I'm shocked that people seem to assume it's such a distinct possibility.
