I was on Twitter and I happen to follow Lord Sugar. He mentioned this service in one of his tweets so I had a look at the website and around google. Seems like it is a pretty good service with a lot of positive buzz right now. It seems like it might be pretty good value, aside from the initial outlay.

Another option is a VPN service called Expat Shield. It's free (with ads) or you can remove ads by paying. Anyway, it gives you a UK IP address, allowing you to watch British TV online (itv, bbc, etc.) My hubby is from the UK and I must say even I miss the British TV sometimes!

I have found Expat Shield to be dreadfully unreliable at not being detected by the services you use. I normally plump for a subscription VPN service like Golden Frog offer.

Hmm, it's sorta like a Roku box, which we already have. Roku is just hardware and then you can add on various channels, which may be free or subscription-based. Though, it's too bad these channels aren't offered as options on there as well! We watch the soaps via YouTube, which I can bounce to the TV through Plex so we're not staring at a computer screen. That way, we can watch it at a time convenient to us vs. 12PM Pacific.

The only thing that puts me off is the steep subscription charge. I don't know that I miss enough that doesn't get broadcast on BBC America or other channels.

Exactly. There are less costly options available and since the box is only for UK programming, that wouldn't be ideal for us since it's so limited. We have cable, so most of the popular shows make their way to BBC America or are made available through a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon in time. Or, PBS for "Downton Abbey."

The best VPNs cost a little more. I used to pay $19.99 a month and I was able to get a UK, EU and US VPN (handy for me at the time as I was moving between Africa and Russia). I never had any interruption in my bandwidth and was able to use it, with some jiggling, to download 'Xbox on Demand' games onto my region-locked UK Xbox using the UK VPN. I could also use it on my phone and tablet too, which was really great compared to other 'mobile' VPN providers.

My guy loves formula 1 as well - all of the races are broadcast live on the Speed Channel, which might be available depending on your cable package. We have comcast right now and are switching to U-verse soon and it's available in both. We've never had a problem watching it on Speed and they also have Speed HD which is great, but he says the commentary isn't as good on the speed channel lol. But yeah, our cable package also includes BBC America so that's good for things like Top Gear. Maybe if you up the cable package you have, you don't have to use Expat Shield

His first year here, we bought a special sports package with Comcast to get Speed in our area, but some of the races were on ABC and not live. He hated the commercials and commentary. Next year he said it wasnt worth the $10 extra a month for just some of the races. We used a Sling Box a couple of years, then various free things like Expat Shield. Next year Fox has part of the contract I think. He went to the US race this year in Austin and had a great time, especially with the Hamilton win. His best friend from the UK came over for a week to go to the race with him. Bloody expensive parking, hotels, etc. All jacked up prices because of F1. Funny how he won't spend $10/mo for race season, but $250 to park at Circuit of the Americas.
