HYDERABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - A mob broke into a Pakistani police station and burnt a man accused of desecrating the Koran alive, police said Saturday, in the latest violence focusing attention on the country's blasphemy laws.

The man was a traveler and had spent Thursday night at the mosque, said Maulvi Memon, the imam in the southern village of Seeta in Sindh province. The charred remains of the Koran were found the next morning.

"He was alone in the mosque during the night," Memon said. "There was no one else there to do this terrible thing."

Villagers beat the man then handed him over to police. A few hours later, a crowd of around 200 stormed the police station, dragged the man out and set him on fire, said Usman Ghani, the senior superintendent of police in Dadu district.

Ghani said around 30 people had been arrested for the murder and seven police detained for negligence.

At least 53 people have been killed in Pakistan since 1990 after being accused of blasphemy, according to the Center for Research and Security Studies, and accusations are becoming more frequent.

Blasphemy in Pakistan is punishable by death but it is not specifically defined by law. During court cases, lawyers often do not wish to repeat evidence against the accused for fear of being blasphemous themselves.

People have been arrested for just discussing or writing about Islam, making mistakes in homework or not joining protests against a film insulting Islam. In some cases, the accusers have had financial disputes with those who are accused.

Most recently, international attention focused on the case of Rimsha Masih, a Christian teenager accused of having some burnt pages of a child's exercise book quoting the Koran in a bag of rubbish she was carrying.

The case was dismissed last month after a neighbor came forward to say she was framed, possibly to chase Christians out of her neighborhood.

In the past two years, two senior Pakistani officials who suggested reforming the laws have been shot dead, one by his own bodyguard. Lawyers threw rose petals at the killer and the judge who convicted him was forced to flee the country.

So it is official policy now that you can't point out that when such actions take place that Islam is not a religion of love and peace as many claim. I can go back and link to hundreds of posts denigrating Christianity , and even one very active thread in which way worse is said about the Pope and Catholicism. One poster said the whole religion is a farce and scam. I do not think Islam is a Religion of Love and peace, but yet in a forum dedicate to debating Politics and Religion I can not state that ?

Is the problem that part of the " don't dare say anything negative about Islam" crowd reports any post that says anything negative about Islam so you appease them. ?

Just answer me one question ? Why is it ok to have very vocal negative opinions about Christianity on this board, but you dare not suggest that Islam is not all about love and peace.

I am a many gun owning white male, the Christian part I am in a bit of flux about. I know most of this debate will be "clean up on aisle 9" as soon as they crawl out of bed, but I have to speak out. This is a debate forum about Religion. I don't understand how they can delete a post because I insinuate that Islam is not a Religion of love and Peace (Hint Christianity isn't either". I am sure becuse we have resident Muslims that hit the complaint button anytime anything they don't agree with is posted about Islam. I have never reported a post before today, but you can be sure that any post that denigrates any religion from this day forward will be reported. I just can't understand why Islam is so different that we dare not take a chance on offending a Muslim, but all the vile hatred thrown at Christians in the forum is ok. Just for the record I am for letting people speak thier mind, but it appears that does not work if you say anything negative about Islam., such as the very obvious statement born out by constant events, that it is not a religion of love and peace. P.S. I eat a Chick Fil A because I support free speech with out government retribution

You are right as I said in my other post, I did miss the meaning of the Cartoon. I still stand by my statement that Christianity as whole frequently and specifically Catholicism in the other thread is wholly attacked, I also stand by my statement that Islam as a whole is not a Relation filled with love and piece, as most Religions are not.

seems these ppl are just standing up for what they believe in. Also this guy was a traveller. why is he in some remote village in pakistan to begin with? he doesnt read travel advisory? its a terrible thing to happen but some ppl just walk right into a jackpot.
