Hi everyone,

I live in Michigan and right now I'm waiting for oath ceremony letter. I got a bad day today, I got cited because i didn't realize I had the high light on the car, so a police pulled me over and then another bad luck; I left my wallet at home when I was leaving for work, I totally forgot I didn't have my wallet with me. So i got a ticket for failing to dim the light and "No Ops on Person" and, with this one, there is a check box saying "Misdeamenor" with option to be waived on the ticket. I will go to the court and pay the fine on monday. The question is that; Will this affect my oath ceremony? Will it prevent me from taking the oath and get citizenship denied? Will USCIS see me as a lack of good moral character because I didn't have DL on me while driving? I'm very worried right now, any answer is appreciated :(

I don't have the answer to your question but what I can say is that USC aren't perfect and they also get pull over, they speed up, they drive without their licences because they leave their wallets at home in a rush to be on time for work (you get my point?) they are just like everybody else in the world, they make mistakes! so what you can do is just be your best as a good future USC and as a good person and go pay your fine and go to court :).

Also a ticket doesn't mean criminal background. Every driver get a ticket at least once in their life, I believe things will turn out well for you! let's see other answers from other members!

Worse case scenario that was posted on this board, a woman awaiting her oath ceremony under the three year marriage had her husband die, she was denied her certificate.

Question #4 at the back of the oath letter applies to you that you have to answer yes to. Not the time to lie, just bring in your traffic violation and proof you paid the fine. I feel you should be fine.

You were ticketed because you had your brights on? Nothing like a burnt out bulb? So you don't have any repairs to make, just had to click your switch. So no need to bring in proof to court a burnt out bulb was replaced.

Since 9/11, even hate to drive anymore, cops are all over the place with nothing else to do.

Thank you you guys, I was shocked when i saw the ticket that driving without license with you, even you have a valid license but simply just forgot it at home, is a misdeamenor! I will go to the court and try to get it waived, if the judge has some mercy on me, maybe he will waive it. I'll keep you posted in case somebody get something like this in the future, maybe my case can be useful to somebody.

Driving without a valid license to operate a motor vehicle is a misdemeanor. Forgetting to take it with you isn't one. Neither is the light issue. What you need to do is provide proof that you have a valid license, have it signed off, and then pay the fine. With the court papers in hand and thus proof that you have no open case pending, you go to the Oath Ceremony and fill the back of the I-445 out properly. Needless to say, you will do that only after you have arrived at the location where the Oath is. When you sign in and surrender your Green Card, an I.O. will be called based on the information on the I-445. He or she will then look at the paperwork pertaining to the traffic incident and sign off on it. End of story.

Now, if you had been cited for a DUI, for example, your Oath would be delayed until the outcome of the court case is documented and until you had complied with the court order, i.e., AA meetings, etc.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
