So I'm watching Piers Morgan tonight, and at the beginning he is showing a video of this guy firing what seems to be a fully automatic weapon, but they are saying it's the same weapon that was used in Newtown. Not sure if anyone else saw it. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm not a weapons guy.

I don't have TV and I do not need it to tell a semi auto from an auto. In the school shooting the shooter did not use an automatic rifle.

The differences are simple and profound.

A self loading (AKA "autoloading" or semi-auto) rifle fires ONE shot with each pull of the trigger, ejects the empty case and loads a new one. The trigger must be fully released and pulled again to fire another SINGLE shot. A person trained with his rifle can fire these single shots quite rapidly. It is not, and can not be an "automatic". It may "look like" an assault rifle, but it is not.

An automatic firearm fires continually when the trigger is pulled until the trigger is released OR until the ammunition supply is exhausted. Incidentally the term "The whole nine yards" comes from the fact that WW2 machine gun ammunition belts were 9 yards long and fighter pilots often said "I gave him the whole 9 yards" to mean they exhausted their ammo supply on an adversary

A "selective fire" rifle allows either mode of firing by means of a switch OR some rifles have a 3 round burst capability to fire THREE shots with each pull of the trigger. "Assault rifles" a term defined by the miltary are, by definition, selective fire. If it is not selective fire, it is NOT an assault rifle. They are not "weapons of war" at least not currently. Our soldiers have been armed entirely with selective fire rifles since 1957. Semi autos have not been a "weapon of war" for 55 years. Psssst, don't tell Diane Feinstein, OK? We did, however, kick the Nazi's @ss with a semi auto rifle that held a paltry 8 shots! Who knew?

By federal law any firearm firing MORE THAN ONE shot per each pull of the trigger is classified as an automatic rifle and regulated accordingly since 1934.

Anti gun news people often wish to imply that we are all running around with unregulated machine guns. It is not a mistake, but it IS a clue for those with a brain that the anti gun people are not being honest. And WHY would they be dishonest?

My brother in law watched that program and described it. From his description it sounds like he had one of those stocks that slide on a rail allowing the person to bump fire. Its not full auto, but it is pretty quick (also not accurate if you consider half the rifle is sliding around on a rail). As far as I know the AR 15 used was not equipped with it.

yes i cnn news interviewing the chief medical examiner say that he only did 8 exam on the dead children an he said that they was shot by the LONG GUN,bushmaster,

The Media usually gets it wrong. Small details like Automatic vs Semi-Automatic are unimportant to them. They can show a picture of a gun that looks like a military gun, that is all they care about.

One of my favorite statements is " Automatic means all the bullets are fired at once". I see that a lot. LOL. In order for that to be true, to fire 30 rounds at once you would need 30 barrels.

It makes a good photo op when you see someone firing a fully auto weapon, but in reality even the Army does not issue the standard M-16 in fully Auto and has not in over 20 years, because in most cases fully automatic fire is a waste of ammo and highly inaccurate .
