An addendum to the NRA's press rant: In 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on a killing spree at Columbine High School outside of Denver, there was an armed security officer. Why didn't the NRA's Wayne LaPierre mention that? Never mind. We know. ~ EJ Montini, Arizona Republic

so, i'm getting the feeling people here are against having more security at schools. how do we protect the kids? right now, not six months from now.

It seems like it. I'm guessing it's easier to say ban all guns in the USA (which isn't going to happen thanks the the Constitution), than it is to come up with a reasonable solution. Out of all the suggestions Iv'e read in the news I like the idea of having a cop or security guard at the schools. It's not full proof but what is these days? There's a reason for security guards (other than the Nazi TSA) at the court houses, USCIS offices, etc... again not full proof but it's a step in the right direction imo.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

More security doesn't need to mean more guns. My kids school has two sets of locked doors with keypad access. Not complete security for sure, but it stops someone just strolling in (or out- one opf my kids is autistic and prone to running).

armed gaurds IS the only answer short term. i don't think the people saying no are thinking logically. it seems that their stance on the subject is being driven by something other than the best interest of the kids.

are those locks on solid doors or window doors? a lunatic w/ a gun bent on causing as much carnage as posible will just shoot the glass & walk right thru.

It sucks that this is what it's come down to but society keeps changing and it keeps changing for the worse imo or so it seems. I'm not saying these shootings never happened when I was a kid, but I honestly can't remember ever seeing anything about them on news other than that bell tower killing on the Texas college campus. Nothing like what's happening today.

Teachers could also be armed with Tasers or the projectile bear spray stuff.

why would we hire and pay for armed officers in all schools when an armed officer within columbine proved ineffective?

Parent volunteers is another way - kind of like a neighborhood watch. Our son goes to a small parochial school and lots of parents are involved daily with the school. But realistic, long solutions are to either to restrict the firepower of guns (limited capacity, fixed magazines) or require gun owners to leverage the risks associated with owning guns by purchasing liability insurance. I don't see any more realistic way to modify behavior.

I still don't see why we need to stop at guns, there are lots of inappropriate behavior in society. It all should be insured, statistically speaking. We should be forced to purchase liability insurance from birth.

Ah yes, back to gun control of course. Because it's not like someone can make or get their hands on an illegal firearm so let's stiff all the legal gun owners. I'm sure all those shootings taking place atm in the larger cities are by legal registered gun owners who donate to the NRA every chance they get.

Funny that 30 white kids in white suburbia get whacked and it's all over the news and people are ready to change the US Constitution yet nothing said about the 543 gun related deaths in Chicago last year. Kind of like how it's always mentioned that Zimmerman is white even though he's Hispanic and that Trayvon Martin is black. Does the media know what buttons to push? You betcha. This is the generation of Star Search, MTV, Dancing with the Stars, and Survivor Island. The only reality in this country is that it's tanking and nobody wants to get to the heart of it. They want the easy way out even though they know gun control does not work. It's been a proven failure in this country.
