Hello All,

Thanks for listening. First off, my husband, originally from Peru, is in the process of "removing conditions" on his temporary perminent residence (greenarcd). We applied back in oOctober for the I-751, he did biometrics in November, received the NOA to extend the green card for one year with work and travel authorization. So, he traveled home to Peru for the holidays to see his family, with the letter and expired greencard with him. His wallet was stolen while in Peru, so now he only has his Peru passport and luckily the extension letter from USCIS which was safe. We have detailed scans of his expired greencard, but I know that's not enough to get him back into the US. Will he need to go tot he embassy in Lima and request a travel letter, How long does that generally take? How easy?

Please any support, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

For return to the US, NOA 1 only works if you have the green card (even if it expired) in hand. So, he'd have to go to the Lima embassy and get a transportation letter - I think it's the foil on a passport page now (like a visa). Having NOA 1 will help them verify he is a resident as well as a copy of his lost green card. Don't know how long it will take them to print the transportation letter - differs from embassy to embassy.

Good luck and I hope he gets back home soon!

Hello All,

thanks for your help, my husband was given a transportation at the US Embassy in Lima (took 7 days in total) and was able to travel back to the US. We still haven't received his approval for the i-751 and are awaiting that along with his 10yr greencard. So now, all he has is the extension letter without the 2yr expired greencard which was lost in Peru.

We're hoping to travel again this summer, but I'm not sure how to go about that as he can only travel with the extension letter and his greencard...I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll get his approval soon (we applied over four months ago). Anyone else had this issue?

thanks again,
