cool - go back today or tomorrow, ask for the number. you'll either get the number or learn of more problems. Go IN !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

SS How-To when you do it 6 months after you arrive:

Walk in, drop your jaw at the amount of people waiting for the same thing.

Grab a number.

Notice that the number currently being called is 55 people in front of you.

Cry a little because you see there are only 3 windows.

Feel relief after you realize there are 20 other windows that you can't see.

Watch a lady get upset that they didn't call her number and they won't go back for her even though you heard them call her, her daughter, and her husbands number 3 times each.

Get called 45 minutes later.

Fork over paperwork.

Get a piece of paper to look over and piece of paper to take with.

Leave.

It was a very invigorating process.

One lady became my friend on a social media, she is in IN too, she arrived here few weeks before me on September 2013 and went to SSA in Louisville to apply the SSN and they made an appointment for her on December 23 to come to SSA office and do the finger prints.

I wonder why she had to do the finger prints.

Question:

Is it ok to just mail the application together with 1-94, ss-5 form, my birth certificate and passport to SSA rather than go to the office?

Thanks smile.png

No, go to an office.

HELP!

- I POE'd on Sept 18/13 and did check for auto application for my SSN

- by Oct 17, I had not received anything so I went to my local SSA office; they didn't see a processed SSN so I filled out the form to apply for a new one; they gave me the printout saying it could take up to 4 weeks as my status has to be verified by Dept of Homeland Security before a SSN can be processed

- fast forward to early-Dec and still nothing; person at SSA office says there was a problem verifying me electronically so I had to be verified via a form, called the G845; they say it's sent to DHS, who then sends it back advising if verified or not

- up to today, still nothing so I go see my local USCIS office who (surprise, surprise) can't do anything for me

- I call my local SSA office and ask to speak with manager; she confirms that the G845 form was sent to DHS on Dec 3 but they haven't replied back; she says that they've tried following up with them but still nothing

How could this be??? It seems that DHS can take their sweet time without being accountable to anybody or to anyone service guidelines. Is there something I can do? I've accepted a job back in Nov and was supposed to start Dec but can't as I can't write my exams necessary for the job until I have my SSN...so frustrating!!!

One more thing: I haven't paid my $165 immigration fee via ELIS yet (doing it tonight). Could this be why I couldn't be verified electronically by SSA? If yes, once this fee is processed and my Green Card is generated, would SSA be able to verify my electronically?

When you read post #1 and applied it to your exact situation, what did you think?

Thanks !

SSN Info for K-1 visa Holders and CR/IR Visa Holders

K-1 Visa Holders

Regardless of your Marital Status, you are allowed to apply for a SSN.

You have a particular time window in which to apply -

starts 2 weeks after POE date and ends 2 weeks before the I-94 expires.

Why are these start/end dates important?

2 weeks after POE date, the SAVE database MIGHT have you in the system.

SAVE is used by SSA clerks to validate you are eligible.

2 weeks prior to I-94 expiring, SSA won't accept the application, as the validity date to

receive it will pass by the time it's mailed out to you.

How to apply:

Get into your local SSA office, bring your passport and I-94 and a birth certificate. The birth

certificate is optional, but some SSA staffers want to see it. Fill out the SS-5 form there, use

your visa name (regardless of marital status) then

--ask the SSA clerk to look you up in the SAVE system via VISA NAME and/or A#.

---If the SSA clerk can't find you, withdraw the SS-5 firmly, and come back in a week.

---If the SSA clerk can find you by VISA Name but not A#, or vice versa, you need to get to a CBP secondary inspection office and FIX YOUR SAVE RECORD with a CBP staffer (see http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/deferred_inspection/overview_deferred_inspection.xml for the local office address). Don't bother with using a telephone, just go to the office. No queues, no lines, no waiting, just go. If the CBP staffer is confused, ask for the shift supervisor - tell them you have issues with your SAVE record..

---If the SSA clerk CAN FIND YOU, YAY! Go through with the SS-5 application. Come back the next day, and ask for the SSN. Note the physical card will be mailed out, but you can have the NUMBER the next working day.

CR-1/IR-1/CR-2/IR-2/IR-5 Visa Holders

'ticking the box' on the DS-230 is sorta teasing to any Visa Applicant.

The SSN may get processed, it may not get processed - it just depends on the clerk doing the

data entry work for the 'intake' on the casefile once yer wife handed it over to any POE

staffer. I know, the tick box was ticked, there's a reasonable expectation that 'something will

get done' based on that tick box...

But -

if it's been more than 2 weeks past the Port of Entry Date,

then there's a good chance that the SAVE database system has synched up,

and

any SSA clerk, at the local SSA office, can find her in the SAVE database.

Ya won't know till you try. Suggest you go in person, bring -

--yer foreign spouse

--yer foreign spouse's passport

--filled out application (can get those at the office, too)

and apply.

Whilst at the SSA office -

Ask any clerk to look her up in the SAVE database, in the VISA name and A#.

If they can't find her by EITHER ONE (name or A#) - go away, do not allow the application to be

accepted, come back in a week - SAVE system doesn't have her, yet.

IF any SSA clerk mumbles 'need DHS/USCIS electronic verification' - do not allow the application to be accepted - come back in a week - SAVE system doesn't have her, yet.

Although SAVE database is useful for 'status checking' at the SSA office (by the SSA clerks) -

many of them are not trained on how to use it. If you get blank looks or mumbles, ask for a

Supervisor, and ask the Supervisor to 'look her up' in SAVE.

If she is found via A# but the VISA name is stored wrong, in SAVE, you'll need to do something else, with the SAVE unit, to get it changed.

It's a hassle, sure, but suggest you do change it to proper spelling of 'VISA NAME' prior to SSN issuance.

My mother has IR5 visa and we went to social security office after about a 3 weeks of her entry in to USA.

We gave passport and alien number both...they used alien number and found an error in the initial verification(IV) results they got from SAVE program.and they gave us a printed piece of paper that shows that SSNAP alien data has correct name but initial verification results has incorrect name.

Error in name is ....verification results show that her first name is entered as first and middle name together....two words instead just one word.

I contact save number for agencies but even though am not agency the lady helped me and said we have correct name ...three words separate first middle and last name ...I said than why it show only two names first+middle together as first and last name? she said she can not answer you...I said what should I do than? she cant answer that either.

Can you please advise what should I do now to correct this error?
