This sounds like a question for the IRS. You might want to call them.

Actually, whenver you file, you make a copy of the whole tax return plus your W2 employer statement(s) and that is good enough. You don't have to wait for your refund or a tax transcript to be ready from the IRS. The W2 backs up that the earnings you are showing on the tax return are valid.

Also you should know that until the filing deadline of April 15, USCIS accepts 2011 as your "most recent" tax return. After April 15, they would be wanting the 2012 tax return. I have read long explanation memos from USCIS saying that if you sign the I-864 prior to April 15, then generally 2011 is okay, even if your interview falls after that date. They go by the date the affidavit was signed. Of course if you have more money you want to show in 2012, then you can submit 2012 tax return as early as you can get it filed. There is no waiting on the IRS to accept it as explained in the first paragraph. It's pretty hard to file at the beginning of January because you need to wait on your W2s from employers or 1099s from banks showing any interest you have earned before you have the information needed to complete your tax return. The employers and banks have until Jan 31 to send those to you. That means it could be February before you have what you need to fill out your tax return.
