For those of you who still watch British soaps. Have you noticed how many characters just head to the airport to start a new life in America? In Corrie Peter and Carla are about to head back to their new life in LA.

All of us on here are aware just how difficult it is to obtain a visa and for people who are not related to a US citizen it is damn near impossible. I wish someone would tell the scriptwriters this.

Anyway that is my random rant for the day. Thanks for listening! :P

My husband and I watch those soaps, too, and have had similar rants at the TV about how ignorant the shows are on immigration, especially in light of the UK's recent immigration changes! Like on "Eastenders" when Christian and Syed up and left to the US. Yeah right! As if someone with the name "Syed Masood" is going to get into the country with no issues? Pfft!

That and the Relocation Shows. People just magically flit themselves to sunny Tuscany or wherever. Never mentioning that they need permission to immigrate & work.

This is more realistic:

A friend told me about that movie just before we entered the immigration process. Still have yet to watch it...probably out of fear.

She’s an overstay from a student visa I think. Ends up getting picked up and deported.

They didn’t show it in Canada, but they should. There are still plenty of people on both sides of our border who think we can just move willy nilly with no government involvement.

OMG I watched this earlier this year when we started K-1, all I could think of is THANK GOD we don't have any overstays. It's so scary! blink.gif

Nobody seems to get how difficult it is to get a visa unless they've gone through it.

My wife's family didn't seem to understand why we got married and she came home alone. They thought I wasn't serious and I had no intention of moving over here. They just didn't get that I had to wait for a visa. She got comments like "Paddy Smith just moved here from Ireland. He didn't wait for a visa" Yeah but Paddy Smith is an illegal and risks being deported and banned for life. I couldn't live like that.

Funny someone should bring this up, because every time I see this happen on tv, I start going off on a rant and my husband just laughs. If only it were that easy. Most my family have no clue how much work we did to have him here. My dad co-sponsored my husband, and we still live with him, and every immigration appointment we had, my dad still said "I thought he was already a citizen".

As for 'Like Crazy' def more realistic, but hated that movie so much. I waited so long for a LDR related movie and it was just so negative.

HAHAHA! I always have this conversation with people because TV/movies are so unrealistic. Or what about that classic Friends episode with Ross and Emily, where they plan to have the wedding in England and then go back and forth on where to live, as if it's just that easy.

I thought exactly the same thing with the recent corrie story line!!!! If only it was that simple!

Me and my husband have refrained from watching Like Crazy until we have the visa (if that will ever happen)

zzzzzzzzzzzzzz so tired of this long process.......

I suppose you also have Phil and Grant Mitchell also getting shot/driving their cars into the Thames and then re-emerging in full health

The girl in Like/Crazy was just so stupid - getting an extension on her student visa shouldn't have been that difficult - but I guess people do dumb stuff like that all the time. The scene where she tries to re-enter is so uncomfortable. But then it wasn't clear to me why they couldn't make it work in England somehow? Other than the fact they were really young and life just changes.
