I have a two-fold question. One, and this is weird, I called to get info about getting a marriage license and the person said that in her passport her name has to be in English. I tried to ask doesn't the Passport have to have each part in English and the lady kept saying her name has to be in English- I don't understand this. Also, I live in a state where we can go as a couple, get a license and get self-married on the spot. Will this be acceptable for AOS? We want to get married before year's end and not have to argue the validity of the marriage. This will be our first marriage to start the legal process and we will then have "real" weddings for family and friends. Thank you.

I guess the person on the phone meant in English-used characters, not another alphabet.

The marriage needs to be recognized and you need to have a marriage certificate issued for AOS.

I would interpret the "English name" part to mean they will only marry people whose name contain English letters and not letters such as " å æ â è ø "

Also you can get married where ever you like- just make sure to get certified copies afterwards from the county (or wherever it is they issue the certified copies) because you need them to get a SS card (if you dont have one) or to change the name on the SS card, or DL.

I am quite sure that "English name" means "name written with characters used in the English language". My name is not very English, and I didn't change it into "Nigel Williams" or the like in order to get a marriage license.
