Hello,

I married my USC husband in 2010 and have been meaning to register my marriage with the Egyptian government through the Egyptian consulate in the US. I called the Egyptian embassy in DC a few times and they haven't been much help at all. I'm hoping I can get the answers I need here to my questions below.

1. What paperwork do I need to send the Egyptian Embassy to get my marriage (which took place in the US) registered with the Egyptian government?

2. Do I need to send anything to DOS?

3. I changed my last name to my husband's last name. Do I need to change my last name on my Egyptian passport and ID? If I don't, is that going to create much hassle in the future?

4. We welcomed our firstborn baby daughter in October of this year. I need to start paperwork on her Egyptian citizenship. What paperwork do I need. Can this be done through the embassy in the US or does it have to be done in Egypt?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I feel bad no one has replied to you yet. Here is my best effort just looking at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington DC site. This is their online resources site which may provide answers for you if you haven't already looked there. Link

My husband also recently had the same problem getting a hold of anyone at the Egyptian Embassy in the States. He kept calling and when he got someone on the line he was told to call back during a certain which always seemed to be when no one was answering. Finally after persistent calling he was able to get someone the phone with some answers. It took about two weeks of calling them.

1. Marriage of Egyptians Abroad http://www.egyptembassy.net/service_ma.html

Also here is an old thread I dug up on here for registering your US marriage in Egypt. Link

2. I'm not sure why you'd think you'd need to contact DOS but I don't think it's necessary.

3. Issuing Egyptian Passport http://www.egyptembassy.net/service_lp.html Also might be answered in link provided in #1. If you travel with the child does the child hold the same last name as you both? This is the only place I might see where it's a problem. If that doesn't work you might try calling one of the other Egyptian Embassy's or emailing the consulate with your question. Link The handful of Egyptian women that I know are married to Egyptians and kept their last name which is different from the husband's so it might not be a big issue about the child's last name being different.

This is what I found for US passports so I'm unsure it would be the same requirements for Egypt but I don't see why not. Link

4. Marbrouk! Issuing Egyptian Birth Certificate http://www.egyptembassy.net/service_bc.html If that doesn't work I believe VJ MENA member amysaid had discussed prior about going through this same process for their child together. I seem to recall her mentioning that they required certificates of the parents religion both being Islam.

This is what I found on Egyptian Nationality. According to that the child is eligible for dual citizenship since you're an Egyptian Citizen. This is what I found on Egypt's Dual Citizenship.

This might be the most helpful link though it's from 2004. It's an Expat site with a thread on New Born Registration in Egypt for foreign born babies.

Her situation is indeed unique being an Egyptian female coming to the States. I think the members on here that do have first hand experience with some of her questions, particularly registering the child's Egyptian citizenship, have since left this site.

Please let us know how it goes for you ameriptian so that it may help others in the future!

Do you mean it's unique that she's an Egyptian female as opposed to an Egyptian male coming to the states? Because as far as registering her marriage certificate, being female doesn't make a difference.

I do know a couple that registered their child's birth but they did so in Egypt.

I'm sorry I don't know about the registration of your marraige in Egypt. Like you, I changed my last name to my husbands. I was able to change my American passport but was unable to do so on my Saudi passport. I had to keep my maiden name. As for Egypt ,though, I don't know if it would make a difference but in our marriage certificate (we were married in Egypt) I requested that there be a little comment that I would change my name to my husbands, which they did. Perhaps if you have this written in whenever you are able to register that would allow you to change your name on the Egyptian passport?

I am glad you asked the question about applying for your child's Egyptian citizenship. We, too, want to register our son for his Egyptian birth paper.

When we were in Chicago in September of this year we went to the Egypt Consulate to know what we needed to get our son his birth paper and passport. It would definitely be easier to do it from Egypt and unfortunately, we didn't come prepared because we could have took care of it right there. Thankfully we can do it by mail here in the US.

First they said to request some forms via mail from the Consulate General in Chicago. I think it was two forms required and we'd have to pay $50 to get them mailed to us. They would need those forms filled out, our son's birth paper, a couple passport style pics of our son, our marriage certificate, the passport of my hubs and me, and I think that might have been it. I don't remember though.

Something you may want to ask the consulate, specifically, is if it's the FATHER's Egyptian passport they need (they told us that's what they wanted - almost like they didn't care where the heck I was from). I know laws are different now, so Egyptian mothers can apply for citizenship for their children but just check to make sure you can do that here in the US or if you have to be in Egypt to do.

Please let us know how it goes.

I was talking to my husband about this tonight, he seemed unsure as to whether your child would be able to get Egyptian citizenship or not. He says that in Egypt they used to only give citizenship to children of male Egyptians, but that recently they passed a law that allowed citizenship to children of Egyptian women, but he's not sure if it has gone into effect with everything that's been going on there. As for the birth certificate application, you'd have to submit proof of your Egyptian citizenship (like your Egyptian passport) and an original of the baby's birth certificate, if your name on the baby's birth certificate is different than your name on the passport you might have some issues... You'll need a copy of your marriage certificate (or maybe the original?) to prove your relationship with your husband. Is your husband Muslim? If so, he will need some kind of proof of converting to Islam if he has a non-Muslim name. If he's not Muslim there might be some issue with your marriage being recognized in Egypt to begin with, since the marriage is not valid in Islam, but I'm not really 100% sure on that. :) My husband has had good luck getting through to the Egyptian Consulate in Los Angeles, maybe try calling them to clarify?

oh, and if you can get a hold of Aya (of John & Aya) she might have some insight, she is an Egyptian who married a USC, she may know more about it. I'll send her a message on FB.

Al Salamu Alaikum Sister,

For the best of my knowledge, do not call and waste your time, but show up there with the following documents,

- Your American Marriage Certificate.

- Your Passport

- Your husband's passport.

- $50.00 cash.

- A legal document of changing your last name.

- Birth Certificate for the baby. If it is in an American Birth Certificate, please make sure to have a translated-notarized copy

It will take about less than 15 minutes, to get stamp on the back of your marriage certificate that verifies your marriage. However, you and your husband should be there in person. Additionally. I think it will be easier to do it in one of Egyptian Consulates around the States.

Good Luck!
