Hi everyone, ok so I'm a permanent resident of the US but a Canadian Citizen through marriage to my husband. We are due to have a baby this Feburary, and I was hoping our baby can get dual citizenship, US/Canada....does anyone know how to do that?

Also, how long do I have to wait as a permanent resident before I can also have both myself and how do I go about getting it?

July 30, 2011: Received NOA2 hardcopy in mail
August 8, 2011: NVC received file
September 1, 2011: NVC case number assigned
September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)
October 6, 2011: Case complete at NVC
November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!
December 7, 2011: POE - Sea-Tac Airport

September 23, 2013: Received NOA1 in mail (receipt date September 19th)

October 16, 2013: Biometrics Appointment

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal

If Canada allows dual citizenships then no problem. My baby has Swedish/American citizenships, the us has no problem with their citizens having dual

1) You cannot have obtained Canadian citizenship through marriage. That was not possible, ever.

2) Your baby will be born with the citizenship of the father and the mother as he or she will have the genetic material of both parents in his or her blood. In ADDITION, any child born in the United States is a US citizen and any child in Canada is a Canadian citizen.

So if a Brit and a Frenchman have a baby in the U.S. this baby will be born with U.K., French, and U.S. citizenship.

If the same Brit and Frenchman have a baby in Canada, then this baby will be born with U.K, French, and Canadian citizenship.

If the baby is a Jew, he or she can quickly add Israeli citizenship for a nice 4-pack.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . If the baby is born in the US, you do not need to do anything out of the ordinary for the baby's US citizenship. For the Canadian citizenship, you register the birth abroad using the instructions in the link posted previously.

Where in the law it says a USC cannot obtain Canadian Citizenship through marriage?

My husband didn’t get Canadian Citizenship by marrying me.

It’s a similar process to the US. I would have to sponsor him to live in Canada and then live in Canada for at least 1,095 days out of 4 year period to be eligible to apply for citizenship.
