The only relevant question is: Why did Adam Lanza have access to multiple high power firearms, multiple high capacity magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition? That is what killed the 26 innocent people - including the 20 little kids - at Sandy Hook. Nothing else did.

McVeigh didn't use a firearm when committing his crime. He didn't exactly shoot anyone either. As such, he is rather irrelevant to the topic at hand. Seems that BD found himself in a corner and thought that this may be a way out of it. It really isn't, of course.

It is interesting, however, that you mention the "law abiding" aspect of this whole gun debate. McVeigh was a lawful owner of firearms. A good, upstanding citizen exercising his second amendment rights. And then he slaughtered well oer a hundred people in cold blood. Some upstanding, law abiding citizen he was.

Typical lib. Never wants to get to the root of the problem because it might affect their world. As has been posted ad nauseum on here, the shooter along with most all these shooters was on meds, and most likely anti depressants. But ya, remember you yuppie parents that when your kids get the best of you and you don't want to break your liberal dogma and discipline them send them to a head shrink so they can get medicated up. Oh and don't forget that most of those anti depressants that were prescribed just a few years ago are now getting recalled. You people crack me up sometimes.

Yeah, there are other ways of treating mental illness. Though I disagree with your indictment of those prescription drugs I would agree that they are not always the best treatment. The problem is that society has clearly demanded that mental health treatment be CHEAP! If you want non-drug based psychiatric treatment will you at least go on record saying you will support the politicians who will vote for the appropriations to fund this better treatment and the tax increases needed to avoid larger budget deficits? The recent tragedy in Colorado has focused attention on mass murderers, and many are asking “Why?” Theories abound, many of them unfounded and ignorant of the actual facts behind spree killings.

According to some statistics:

■78% off those responsible for crimes of mass violence had a history of suicidal thoughts and actual suicide attempts.

■34% of mass murderers had a “mental health evaluation” before the attack

■17% were diagnosed with a mental or behavior disorder.

The statistics regarding the connection between dangerous psychiatric drugs and random violence is in actual fact much higher.

Dr. Moira Dolan, an internal medical doctor with the Medical Accountability Network, has this to say about the connection between mass murderers and psychiatry:

“There are numerous examples of people who have gone off on a shooting rampage and killed their classmates, their co-workers, members of their family and often took their own lives, then it was shortly discovered that they were taking an antidepressant. The apparency is that the person was mentally ill and went on a rage but when these cases have actually been looked at closer, what we find is that the person did not have any violent tendencies and in most cases was not even suicidal before they started treatment with their antidepressant medication.”

Dr. Dolan makes the point that random violence and mass killings are the acts of monsters. The fact that children have access to guns and violent movies do not create monsters. But drugs that alter brain chemistry can have this effect on susceptible individuals.

Dr. Ann Blake Tracy, PhD and author of a book called “Prozac, Panacea or Pandora?” discovered in her research that in 24 out of 32 cases of murder suicides involving women and their children, the mothers were taking Prozac.

Here are some known facts about antidepressants:

■They are associated with violent behavior, which includes tendencies towards homicide and suicide

■Of the top 10 drugs which are linked to violence, 50% are antidepressants

■Some people are especially vulnerable to homicidal behavior when taking these drugs, as they are unable to metabolize these drugs

■Research has been done proving that placebos are just as effective in treating mental illness as psychiatric drugs.

■They can cause agitation

■They have been responsible for improper Bone development

■They can cause gastrointestinal bleeding

These drugs are so dangerous, why are they still marketed so vigorously? And why, with all the dangerous side effects, both mental and physical, are they promoted to our youth?

The answer lies in the enormous profits made by the huge pharmaceutical companies who gain by marketing these dangerous drugs. At the expense of our children’s health and the safety of the public, these drugs are continually promoted as safe and necessary.

Instead of making the obvious connection between the use of antidepressants and violent behavior, their spokespeople twist the truth and claim that the mental illness caused the violence, not the drug.

And the pharmaceutical company representatives, along with the psychiatrists who push these deadly drugs promote their lies with a straight face.

The public has been an unwitting victim of pharmaceutical greed for too long, and is finally awakening to the enormous and damaging results these drugs have caused.

Yeah, there are other ways of treating mental illness. Though I disagree with your indictment of those prescription drugs I would agree that they are not always the best treatment. The problem is that society has clearly demanded that mental health treatment be CHEAP! If you want non-drug based psychiatric treatment will you at least go on record saying you will support the politicians who will vote for the appropriations to fund this better treatment and the tax increases needed to avoid larger budget deficits? I am serious. Are you?

Actually , the consensus among those I've seen interviewed that had any contact with him in life have stated he was highly intelligent, quiet, and withdrawn. But never have I heard anyone suggest he was a "ticking time bomb". By most accounts, he was supposed to be a regular kid with a developmental disorder that affects a whole lot of kids nowadays and people were genuinely shocked that he did this.

I have a nephew with autism and he's quite intelligent, quiet , and withdrawn. He's also on a specific diet that his mom monitors and not on any medication.

You can find an author, or many, on the internet to say anything you might choose to want to believe. I know it may come as a shock to you but not everything you read on the internet is true!

I do agree that there is over-prescribing by all specialties. But the arguments you present are not the most balanced or objective. Many people have 'an axe to grind' as they say and just like the fox news 'echo chamber', they reinforce each other in their biased ignorance. I have education and hands on experience that informs my opinions here. Let me put it to you in a way you may understand better. How many times have you read or heard something by some New York or Washington DC 'expert' on wolves in Alaska that you know by personal experience to be utter BS? Bottom line is that there are mass shootings involving meds and there are those that do not. The one and only thing these killing sprees have in common are the firearms. You can deny that all you want but it still remains a fact. I've listed in another thread a long list of school shootings going back to the 1950s. That was in response to the ridiculous claim that prior to passing the gun-free school zone legislation, school shootings did not happen. Same applies here. Were all those killers medicated, too? Back to the 1950's? What about all those shootings that occurred on school grounds back in the 1800's and early 1900's? That's a long fcuking list, too. All involving meds? Really? Of course not. All involving guns? Absolutely.

McVeigh didn't use a firearm when committing his crime. He didn't exactly shoot anyone either. As such, he is rather irrelevant to the topic at hand. Seems that BD found himself in a corner and thought that this may be a way out of it. It really isn't, of course.

It is interesting, however, that you mention the "law abiding" aspect of this whole gun debate. McVeigh was a lawful owner of firearms. A good, upstanding citizen exercising his second amendment rights. And then he slaughtered well oer a hundred people in cold blood. Some upstanding, law abiding citizen he was.

I know how to eliminate cancer deaths. As soon as someone is diagnosed with cancer, give them a glass of cyanide. This simple treatment will insure that no one dies from cancer ever again (unless we don't get the chance to 'treat' them). Eliminating guns completely (if that were possible) would eliminate gun deaths. But the real discussion is about people snapping and choosing to kill other people. Guns are an important part of that discussion, but shouldn't limit it.

Your point is valid that guns make it easier to kill people. If they didn't the whole discussion would be ridiculous. If guns weren't more effective than knives, no one would complain about not having access to guns since they could still use knives and be just as effective at defending themselves. But the fact remains that people snap and kill people with knives, bombs, poison, cars, their bare hands, and many other things. Saying that is irrelevant because you want to talk about guns just makes your position obsessive and detached from reality. This is a thread about mental illness as a cause of mass murder (context). You asked an inane question. Obviously, anybody without a gun can't kill anybody with a gun. But people without guns can still kill people. Tim McVeigh is relevant because without ever touching a trigger he killed more people than anyone with a gun ever has in a single shooting (as far as I am aware).

What does reducing the number of guns out there really do? There are hundreds of millions of guns. Many of them are off the records. It's like neutering stray male dogs. Even if you neuter 90% of them, the other 10% are more than capable of impregnating all of the females and you have done nothing about the stray dog population. Get rid of 90% of the guns in America and there will still be enough guns that people who want to commit gun crime will be able to obtain guns.

There are lots of ways to address mass murders. They all need to be examined. Restricting the means to kill lots of people is a start. But looking at the motivations of these murderers is also important. This is why I object when you try to make this all about guns. Normal people don't go on killing sprees, nor are guns required to go on killing sprees. Focusing only on the guns and stating that any event that doesn't involve guns is irrelevant is very shortsighted.
