Hi VJ members,

I just had a question regarding police certificates, when should I get this done? we still haven't gotten our NOA2, we do have a lawyer and he hasn't mentioned anything yet I'm guessing because we are still waiting for NOA2 but I'd like to get everything ready to go once we reach the time. So for the police certificate I just go to my local police station and ask them for it? how long does it take to come in? since I'm asking about police cert I should also mention that when I was around 12-13 years old I stayed in Turkey for 7.5 months, do I need to obtain a police certificate for this also? or since I was under 16 there is no need??

another question that I have is regarding previous addresses, I read somewhere that you have to include your previous addresses on form DS-260 since the age of 16, I unfortunately don't remember the exact addresses and dates, where can I obtain this information?

I appreciate any kind of help you guys can give me, thanks :)

You can try your local police department; some will do it and others will direct you to the RCMP. You can also go the http://www.commissionaires.ca/ route. You need to ask for the CPIC. From what I hear, the RCMP will ask for fingerprints but if you haven't been convicted of a crime you don't need them with the commissionaires. (I phoned and asked).

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the police certificate is good for 6 months, so you may want to wait a month or so before getting it?

I had my police check done on December 7th. I just got my NOA2 on the 11th. They are good for a year for the Montreal Consulate which is where you'll be going, just like me. The poster with a spouse in India is likely correct for THEIR police checks but ours are good for a year. I would just go get it done now so it's taken care of. I went to the local police services office in my region in Ontario. The check took about 15 minutes. I needed two pieces of ID in order to obtain it and the cost was $40 I think. Different locations charge different amounts so you'll need to search for the service in your area and give them a call. That's all I did and they told me exactly where to go and their web site told me what to bring.

I forgot to add that someone here told me that if you "stayed" aka "visited" somewhere for several months vs. living there (Turkey) then you don't need the police check or to include that as an address either.

Also, for addresses, I am having the same struggle. Is there anyone in your family who can help nail down dates with you?

Hi VJ members,

I just had a question regarding police certificates, when should I get this done?

The police certificate is good for one year and is one of the easiest documents to obtain so I wouldn't do it before you get your NOA2.

we still haven't gotten our NOA2, we do have a lawyer and he hasn't mentioned anything yet I'm guessing because we are still waiting for NOA2 but I'd like to get everything ready to go once we reach the time. So for the police certificate I just go to my local police station and ask them for it? how long does it take to come in?

I went to my local police station and they redirected me to another station in Mississauga where I asked for a CPIC check. 5 minutes and $45 later I had it. However, depending on where you live you might get redirected to the RCMP, which is slower and unnecessary unless you have a criminal background. Fingerprints are not necessary otherwise. Commissionaires is a reliable way to get your police check if your local police don't seem helpful. More information about police checks here: http://www.visajourney.com/wiki/index.php/Canada#Police_Checks

since I'm asking about police cert I should also mention that when I was around 12-13 years old I stayed in Turkey for 7.5 months, do I need to obtain a police certificate for this also? or since I was under 16 there is no need??

Don't think so since you were under the age of 16. If you were born in a country outside of Canada you must get a certificate for that country though.

Why are you using a lawyer? They usually get paid to do what anyone could do just reading the VJ guides and slow down the process.

Thank you all for your replies,

I will get the police check done as soon as I get my NOA2 then, as far as the addresses I have no idea what to do, my parents don't seem to remember the exact date or addresses, so I'm kind of screwed there :(

I was born outside of Canada, but I've been in canada since I was 13 and have never gone back to my birth place, do you think it is still neccessary to get one? my lawyer hasn't mentioned anything to me, he has the same nationality as I do so I'm assuming he would have told me.

We are using a lawyer because we didn't want to deal with the paperwork ourselves, my husband has very little free time, I still find this site very helpfull though.

I believe its over the age of 16......and keep in mind--depending what country you were born in.....there may be an extended wait to get ur visa back after the interview...as they may review it more

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Ok great, because quite frankly I wouldn't know where to get that done. I know they put muslim men/women in AP but I'm not muslim, I guess I will take it as it comes, Thanks :)

Doesn't have to be muslim.....can be from any of the countries that the USA doesn't get along with that great. But ur paying ur lawyer $$$$$--ensure you get HIM/HER to do the research!

I thought police certificates were required if your country of birth is something other than Canada but I might be wrong, I'm looking for a source to back me up but can't find one. Sorry for the confusion. (I -think- it's if you have a nationality other than/in addition to Canadian and you lived in that country for more than 6 mos.)

Yes Cdns have to have a Police Background check completed. 1 check from ur local police or RCMP or even the commissionaires in some areas, covers everywhere you have lived in Canada. Just ensure they did search all of Canada, and under all names you have used.
