Hi there all,

I'm a 26 year old male based in Sydney, Australia working professionally in finance at the moment. However a few weeks ago i suffered a serious knee injury which requires surgery this week (reconstruction). I have been playing soccer for the better part of 20 years and in my teenage/adult years never had the opportunity to experience the northern hemisphere summer due to soccer commitments and general love for the game and club..

With this injury it means i will be unable to play the 2013 season which will give me a perfect opportunity to travel in the summer months over there. I have lived all of my life in Australia and completed a bachelor degree in finance/economics. I'm currently living with my parents, all my school/university my friends are still here as are my family in particular my eldest brother and my 1 year nephew :)

At the moment i'm planning on leaving early next year(feb) with a friend who will be with me for 2.5 months but i want to stay on and travel by myself for a while around the east/west coast of America, central/south america, mexico visiting friends i have met whilst stuyding. I want to apply for the B2 tourist visa as i will most likely be coming in and out of the US depending on the plans for the trip which will be constantly changing.

I have enough funds to cover the for the whole 6 months and intend to be back towards the end of the football season (July/August) to cheer my team on in the finals and of course go away with them on the end of season trip... I'm also using this trip to clear the mind as i want to begin a masters degree on return to upskill...

I will have all the documentation in regards to the operation if that is an issue that may arise...

Any advice on the likelihood of being successful for the B2 tourist visa? I have also heard that if im not successful with the B2 visa than i may not be able to travel at all as i may not receive the VWP?

I think your chances are reasonable, especially if you can get a letter from your employer that they will take you back. But they do tend to be suspicious of VWP tourists who want to stay longer. If you will travel to South America etc too, you may be better off breaking up the trip- a couple of months in the USA, a couple of months down there, then back to the USA.

Yes, if you get denied the B2 you will not be able to sue the VWP for several years.

I would stick to using the vwp because if for whatever reason the B2 is denied, you can't use the vwp anymore.

If you want to travel for 6 months between north and south America why not spend some time in each and break it up so you're not overstaying your vwp?

That is just my opinion though, of course go for the B2 but know the pros and cons of applying :)
