You can't beat a mental illness out of a child. You can't put a child in time out until the mental illness goes away. You also can't shove drugs down their throat until it goes away.

What's "time out"?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Ya know, with all of these things 'coming out',

you'd think that there's a bank of professionals somewhere, who have been hard at work, trying to solve this, during the past 20 years.

Where's their research, where's their recommendations, where's the bills in the house or senate that PROTECTS these kids from the prison system?

hmmm.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

so, you think that whipping a kid will also whip the mental illness out of their brains? is that like .. the female body has ways to shut the rape thing down?

Funny how all these shooters were on or had been on anti depressants. Of course it's much easier for parents to farm out their kids to the shrink then to discipline them. More than a few school districts including at least one large one here in Alaska have been busted for pushing meds on kids that while they were getting kick backs from the company that produced said meds. Do a google on Ritalin abuse. Even PBS had a two hour special on it seeing how it's gotten out of hand.

We had plenty of guns accessible to us when we were younger, in fact I don't know of a kid that I grew up with that didn't have at least one gun in their closet or under their bed yet none of them were shooting anyone.

because some doctors and parents are riding the over-medicating trend does not mean that mental illness is caused by lack of discipline. very few well adjusted adults are the product of abusive parents - you're a prime example. your answer for everything is violence.

Right about then would have been the time my mom would grab the broom or whatever she could get her hands on and beat me or any of my siblings upside the head until the handle broke. Then when my dad got home from work he would have done 10x's worse. It was similar for my friends and their parents also. That was how parents took care of it and it worked like a charm yet they didn't ever mention mental health. It was either you showed respect and did what they told you or you got five across the eyes, and a few minutes later the belt.

That was back when you had parents and children. They weren't one and the same and the lines never crossed. The parents called the shots, the parents paid the bills and put a roof over your head, and until you got out of the house and paid your own way you were subject to their whims.

You know, I don't always agree with Bad daddy, but this post strikes a chord with me. Most kids that grew up in the 60's and 70's had this kind of parenting, if I ever called my mom a b*tch, having my eletronics taken away would have been a blessing. She would have beat me into next week, back then it wasn't child abuse it was parenting. And when Dad got home you got it again. I had "aunts" and "uncles" that weren't even related to me and if they found out, I got it from them as well. My mother still believes it takes a village to help raise a child, and to this day, I have the upmost respect for her and my dad, she still "grounds" me from time to time(I'll be 40 next year)

Now I don't advocate violence in any way, but I will say this, most of my friends who went through this are God Fearing, respectful members of society with kids of our own. Do I beat my kids? No. Sometimes I had to whip them and it hurt me to do so, but whatever they did before they didn't do again. They listen before they do something they know will get me or their mother mad. I don't know about mental health, so I can say who needs help or not, but if parents would discipline their kids instead of trying to be their best friend, maybe some of these kids wouldn't have gone down that road.

Lets see if there's a pattern. New Age parents refuse to whip a kids ####### when they get out of line. The kid learns that acting like a brat has about zero consequences so the kid gets/acts even worse. The kid does the same in school seeing how teachers aren't allowed to use a paddle on kids like they used to. The parents get the sh*ts of the kids behavior as does the school and one or the other ...or both, send the kid to a head shrink and then the kid gets prescribed for meds. The meds actually make the kid a real nutter now instead of just a misbehaved brat. Next thing you know little Johnny is shooting his class mates after the drugs have taken their toll on little Johnny.

My parents raised three children, two of which are quite a bit older than I am. They grew up in the 70s and were spanked and physically disciplined. I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and never had a finger laid on me. I'm the only one of the three who hasn't been arrested at least once.

I grew up respecting and obeying my parents without the threat of violence.

I personally don't care if a parent chooses to spank their child. I just think the notion that kids who weren't beat turn out to be the crazies is ridiculous.

You hit the nail on the head...other than the part where you rarely agree with me. :hehe:

The worst was after you got beat by your mom she would tell you; "wait in your room until your dad gets home". Nothing sucked more than lying on your bed knowing that in another hour or two you were about to get the beating of your life. Another screwed up one was when you were told to go outside and find a switch. My grandma and aunt were famous for that one. I mean who wants to start looking at tree branches to get beat with? I would find one and then crack it just a little bit so you couldn't get a visual on it unless you looked real close and usually after the second or third whack it would crack in half. After that happened they were done. It helped to limit the amount of whacks you got. :D

you're missing the point, again. i'm not denying that children are misdiagnosed and over-medicated. i have been fighting to keep my 10 year old son off meds since he was first diagnosed with add. i had a horrible experience with 2 years of prozac that i still have side effects from and i'll never go down that road again...however, the people who have been responsible for mass shootings have had severe mental issues that would have been there regardless of how they were disciplined growing up. while the drugs used in their treatment may have made their situations worse, are you proposing that the drugs caused the mental illness? i mean if you're going to go that route, may as well go hard and blame mkultra..

My nine year old nephew is a little bast@rd from the word go. The school said he had ADT or whatever it's called and instead of putting him on meds my brother in law started him up in hockey. The kids been way better ever since. He gets to go 100+ mph on the ice and beat other kids up at the same time. He set the record this season for time in the penalty box yet he's leading the league in goals. Sports is a great way for them to get rid of that extra energy. By the time they get home their ready to eat and hit the sack.
