Confronted the guy? How did he do that? Did he just stare the shooter down scaring him so much that he had to shoot himself? Or maybe he was hypnotizing the shooter into shooting himself.

What a gigantic load of bull #######.

The LWN media and anti gun nuts hate these kind of stories hence the reason it hasn't went mainstream on such sites as MSNBC.

You like to paint with a pretty wide brush there! I proudly identify as a liberal/progressive in my politics! I like this story. Yes, nobody really knows what was going on in this deranged shooter's head. But I recognize it is certainly possible that this concealed carry citizen may have been the reason this episode ended when it did. Obviously it is possible and will sometimes happen that guns held by the right persons will save innocents. And if there are so gxx-dxxn many guns out there in our society that every wacko and homicidal maniac can easily get his hands on as many as he 'needs' maybe more sane citizens will find the need to carry as well.

But what is undeniable by reasonable and objective people is that the extreme number of guns in our country has not made us safer overall! If gun-control laws actually could rapidly get us to the same situation as much of the rest of civilized western countries enjoy I would be pushing for them. Sadly, I have concluded that is not remotely possible. It is unfortunately true that if guns were out-lawed today, that it would only be outlaws with guns and there would be a huge number of them. Guns are, for our society at least, a significant factor in a lot of evil and carnage. I wish I knew how it could be stopped. Maybe all citizens need to have comprehensive gun education classes in our schools and learn to pass proficiency exams. Then, at least, you could hope that the majority of guns and their carriers out there might more often be a force for good. Would it work out that way or would the situation go from very bad to even worse?

Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the USA followed by Washington DC/District of Columbia. Both those cities are war zones.

Chicago had 542 gun related deaths in 2011 and has already surpassed that number for 2012. That's an average of 42 shootings a month that resulted in death. How many of those involved a licensed gun owner?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Are you really so ignorant that you cannot recognize the futility of local gun-control laws? If a neighboring jurisdiction does not have such gun laws it becomes ridiculously easy to obtain guns in spite of any gun-control laws! :bonk:

I didn't see anything about giving hero credit to anyone. I saw an article where the licensed gun owner decided not to shoot because he had people behind the shooter which is the right decision, and the shooter shot himself after he cleared his weapon in the stairwell. It was the gun owners opinion that the shooter decided not to take anymore innocents after seeing that he had been made by a person with a gun. It's only the gun owners opinion for people to make out of it as they will. I don't have any opinion on why the shooter killed himself seeing how I don't know what he was thinking at the time. It's all speculation.

So your thinking is the gunman, fearing a law abiding citizen with a gun might shoot him, shot himself to be spared that ghastly fate? Good call! Hard to argue with that logic.

If there is no story (your latter back track claim) because it's all speculation what is there to justify spamming this story across mainstream media?

Jeez I don't know. Let's see. A wingnut goes off and whacks two people in a Oregon suburban mall, the story is plastered for days all across the news outlets, and a man in the mall draws his gun while making a visual on the shooter. Let me guess. There's not enough there for to make a follow up?

I believe that's what this man says happens. But, there's no way to know what actually happened or what actually stopped the shooter. But the pro-gun crowd (not that I'm anti-gun) wants to take credit for this. So oh well. Who cares about proof or facts when they like the story?

well, we have an eyewitness report, and the opinion of a non-participant who was 3000 miles away...

All there IS is an opinion. He thinks the shooter saw him and stopped. Good for him. That's an opinion, though.

Sorry, don't spend all day here on a weekend refreshing and looking for your responses.

I understand he was there. And what he said happened might very well be true. But he doesn't know why the shooter lost his nerve and neither do you. So to give the gun the credit is merely speculation. Give credence to whatever makes you feel better. I don't personally care.
