may i add a question? in january I will be appling for sveta gc once she has gc could she travel to the same vwp as I can without visa? just to make sure I understand all

Ron from what I understand Sveta has a passport of Ukraine so she will need to follow the requirements of a Ukraine citizen to be able to travel to other countries. This would mean she would need to get a visa to travel to most other countries as a Ukraine citizen even if she has a green card. When she qualifies for a US passport then she would not have those issues

The answer to your question is no, the GC only allows her to travel back into the US. If she needs a visa based on her country of passport holder, than she will have to obtain it.

Being a LPR of the US, does not strip anyone of thir citizenship to the country that they holds a passport for. IF they needed a visa to travel to those countries before they obtain their US LPR status, than they will still need one after they have obtained a GC thru their LPR. There are only 2 countries of exceptions, those countries are Canada and Mexico. These 2 countries will allow a LPR to travel into their country using their GC inplace of an approved visa.

As others have stated, she will travel on her PI passport and is subject to the rules and visa requirements of a PI citizen for visiting that country--also the travel document's name must match the name on her PI passport. The fact that she has AP and soon a GC MAY help her get a visa to a country that most PI citizens cannot get, but the only thing the AP and GC do is allow her to re-enter the US without any type of visa since she is a LPR.

Good luck,

Dave

She is married to me and her last name is now different since she takes on my name. Can she use her PI passport and have her marriage license to show why the travel document doesn't match passport?

No.

See this link here: http://visacentral.com/index.php?login=45773&sgid=sm&utm_campaign=delta&utm_medium=visaandpsp&utm_source=visa which is where you enter your nationality, travel to country and it will tell you what she needs.

Her GC doesn't give her the same travel rights as a USC. She travels on her foreign passport which determines what she needs to visit other countries.

I think the requirements for your wife traveling with you will be different once she has a green card.

I know for traveling into Canada to visit we had to wait until my wife had her green card, even with the AP card, as Canada wanted her to have a visa for entry, but with the green card its not an issue.

No, the travel documents MUST match the name on the official government issued ID used for international travel. If she can travel on the GC only, then the travel documents can be in the name on the GC. If she must use her PI passport then the travel documents MUST be in the name on the passport. The GC is a re-entry permit to the US only. Taking the Marriage Certificate will help some airlines people make the connection between the two names.

Have a nice trip,

Dave

A US GC holder does get to travel visa-free to Mexico and Canada as a perk of being a US LPR, no matter their citizenship. For any other country, however, there is no extra perk and they will need an appropriate visa.
