I got my green card two weeks ago and then on tuesday received my social. We have been trying to add me to the remaining things my husband and i have together that we couldnt add me to without a social. Everytime ae try the company contacts us needed a copy of my green card or social security card for verification purposes. Has anyone else had this problem? It seems the social is the problem. I also applied for a credit card to start building cred and they said they needed a copy of my ss card for verification purposes also!

Your social number is everything as far as applying for credit. Every bank, store or visa/master charge application will always check with credit reporting agencies as to your credit worthiness and they do it by your social. It is the way we do business.

This happened to me too. When i first tried to open a bank account here, they made me send in copies of my green card and SSN before they finally approved my application. When filling out applications online, my SSN also always came back invalid. Half a year later (after the husband added me as a joint account holder on his oldest credit card), things seemed to have straightened themselves out.

Don't know if it's the lack of credit history that was throwing things off. But that was my experience.

Good luck!

Hmm it may vary by state. I never had any problem opening bank accounts, etc. And all they needed was my SSN alone, not a copy of it. I was also able to use my married name although I haven't changed it on my social.

Do you think it's possible that your SSN is not in the system yet, and that's why they need to see the actual copy? I just think it's dangerous to have it laying around somewhere in an office.

Thanks for the replies guys! I do think it may be due to the lack of credit history or maybe because i just got it. Maybe once in use it will straighten itself out! I do agree with the lying atound thing. I dont feel comfortable sending a copy of it through but i dont really think i have a choice. Without a copy of it i dont see them accepting it. It may be a bank thing because the only two companies who have asked for a copy were credit card companies and banks
