  1. 1. What should the national response be to this tragedy?

    • There shouldn't be a national response at all.

where do you get the idea that's the specific pistol model used?

CNN reported Sig Sauer rifle

NBC news (via AP ) reported a .223 caliber rifle.

Just piecing together all the reports.

That article also gives a little more insight about the shooter.

OH, the glouck was reported by CNN first I believe.

give it a day or so, news reports change as we've seen already with the age of the shooter. i've been taking everything the news says with a bit of skepticism due to the mixed reporting all day.

and there should NOT be any gun control.

Which part of "Shall not be infringed" do you all not understand in the second amendment of the constitution?

The right to bear arms was granted by constitutional amendment. Why do you think that right couldn't be modified or removed by constitutional amendment?

The constitution was amended 12 times in the 20th century. By historical standards, we are actually overdue for an amendment.

No one has ever changed the bill of rights

By a constitutional amendment? Or by judicial interpretation or legislative tinkering? Because there's an argument to be made that there's been changes via the two latter methods to a few including, for example, the Fourth Amendment.

I just learned about this story way late because of work. I am completely devastated because of this. I am all about the second amendment. But i am not sure if its worth keeping when things like this happen. This is a new day and age were people completely disregard responsibility and the sanctity of other people. It is our job to protect our children and the their protection has to come before their education. I could walk right into my sons elementary school and hang out for 20 minutes in the hallways before somebody would notice that i did not belong there. I have been reading alot of forum topics on here lately about gun control and maybe you Dems are right about it. If it would stop a cataclysmic tragedy from happening again like this in the future then i would vote for it.

By vote for it what exactly do you mean? You would vote to have all guns taken away from law abiding citizens? Let's see where this story ends up. I think this is a mental health issue.

The local media is reporting that the young man was autistic and had mental issues from an early age. His mother had recently quit work to stay home and care for him. Why she thought it was a good idea to have guns in the house is beyond me. I'm sure if she had lived she would not be able to handle the guilt of this.

I'm thinking he would not have been able to purchase weapons on his own.

We don't have more access to guns but we have way more gun violence. So what has changed has not been more guns.

As I said before, if you leave something constant in a changing environment, then that constant something will all of a sudden have a different impact. We have got to figure out how to keep firearms out of the hands of people not fit to handle them. We have got to put a stop to the back-door arms dealing at gun shows. We have got to accept that more guns do not translate into more safety and security. We have got to start somewhere and be serious about it. I am not prepared to shrug this monstrous event off. I do not believe that the right to bear arms trumps the right to live. And where the former infringes on the latter, the former has to give.

Huckabee claims it's a cultural problem with guns and games and the desensitization of gun violence. I disagree with his opinion somewhat.

When I was a kid I had toy guns from the time I was about three years old. I've got pictures of myself with six shooters strapped on my waist. I also had toy military guns, cap guns, dart guns, bb guns, and so did all my friends. Almost every game we played involved "killing" each other. We played cowboys and indians, cops and robbers, war, and any other game we could think of where the object was to kill one another. Real guns were readily available to me and all my friends and yet we never even considered touching them. That was in the late 60's and early 70's.

What has changed since then? That is what American society has to address.

What kind of a "mental health" issue do you think autism is?

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

He was probably using the Federal legal description of the 90s. Assault weapons were generally defined by aesthetic rather than functional features.

exactly.. thank you

Bingo :-) That's the point I was trying to make, thanks. It would make them cumbersome for combat. If the point is to do mass damage quickly...the assault weapon is needed.

Mass damage quickly... I would take a shotgun with .00 over a M-16 any day , in the a clsoe situation like most of the tragedies have happned in. Now if we are in fairly open terrain and some distance between us.. then no

I keep a Mossberg Pistol Grip 12 gauge under the bed for home defense. The first round is bird shot, hopefully to stun and put an assailant in retreat. The next 5 are .00 buck. That is like having a small cannon in your hand. It will create mayhem . Trying to argue that a weapon like that is not as potent as a AR-15 is the argument os someone that does not understand weapons.

IIf you caught me unaware in your home I would rather face an AR-15 than a double barrel with buck shot. The shotgun is a proximity weapon. I.E. point in the general direction.
