  1. 1. What should the national response be to this tragedy?

    • There shouldn't be a national response at all.

This could be a culture thing. I didn't grow up in America so I asked earlier in the year in a thread 'Why is it that America dominates in rampages of this magnitude or fashion?'

Is it access to guns or a mental thing where this is how Americans solve their problems?

Let's say for a moment that it's not the easy availability of guns that accounts for or at least significantly contributes to these massacres that take place on an all too regular basis in this country. Let's say that there are too many people with mental issues out there. If there's a mental crisis in this country would that not make the case for stricter gun control even stronger? This is ridiculous. 20 innocent little kids got their lives snuffed out today and there are people still worried more about continuing to flood this country with firearms than to protect our children? That is sick!

Gun control is the way to go force it.

I think we should take away freedoom of speech and the right to vote while we are at it. Force it

What is cheaper?

A. Buying a gun

B. Seeing a psychiatrist for a mental health condition

There lies the problem, anyone who is mentally unstable cannot get access to mental health care or any form of health care in this country because its so expensive. It's just easier to buy a gun, in their minds its the only way out. This is why incidents like this never hardly occur in Western Europe because of universal healthcare where its affordable for all citizens.

logic would dictate that a mental health crisis be met with mental health treatment, of which there is a serious lack of.

dude give it a rest. she doesn't want to take away anyone's rights to own guns. she's said it multiple times.

Seriously. In big, red, bold letters even. I can't use any smaller words, so I'm not sure how to get the point across.

Obviously, we're not prepared to do that. So we accept that we have a mental health crisis in this country and those lucky enough will live with that. Those not lucky enough - such as the kids and teachers today - won't live. The question we ought to start answering is whether the right to live is more precious than a flood of guns. These two rights cannot co-exist.

It is sad incident that something like this happened.

The problem is lot of younger generation cannot differentiate between the reality and video game.

I would not go in details as its not yet clear but it might be this guy shot her own mother and if that is true there was lot more going on to the whole incident.

These are isolated instances not regular occurrences.

Obviously never saw the word "hardly" in my post. Yes it's happened in Western Europe on some occasions but nowhere near the frequency of what happens in the USA.

we're far more capable of stepping up our game in regards to mental health than we are to ridding the world of weaponry.

America has a much larger population and I'm sure we can all admit that there is a problem that is leading to these events.

I don't think people walk into kindergarten classrooms and shoot all the children on a regular basis anywhere and it can and does happen in both countries with socialized healthcare and those without.
