The Church may be granting you an exception to the rule because of the K-1 requirement to marry within 90 days.

My family has had many weddings in California. The Catholic church here require the couple to go through 9 months of counseling before marriage. The San Diego Diocese calls it the Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation Program. Every member of my family who had a Catholic church wedding in San Diego has had to go through the program in order to get marry in the church.

Here is the link for the San Diego Diocese; http://www.diocese-s...rriageprep.aspx

Diocese of San Diego

GUIDELINES FOR MARRIAGE PREPARATION

The very preparation for Christian marriage is itself a journey of faith. It is a special

opportunity for the engaged to rediscover and deepen the faith received in baptism and

nourished by their Christian upbringing. In this way they come to recognize and freely accept

their vocation to follow Christ and to serve the kingdom of God in the married state.

Familiaris Consortio, John Paul II, 1981, n. 51.

PERIOD OF PREPARATION

Length of Preparation Period

Engaged couples who will be married within the Diocese of San Diego, or who wish to complete

their preparation for marriage in the diocese, should contact their local priest or deacon

approximately nine months before their intended wedding date. Exceptions may be granted only

for a serious reason. It is recommended that couples should be encouraged to start their marriage

preparation even before setting a wedding date.

The formal preparation should be completed two months before the marriage ceremony.

You're right, they must be granting us an exception. We are registered for a 2-day pre-cana thing when I get there and we are having counseling every couple of weeks over Skype until then so that gives me peace of mind that they are still making us meet the requirements but in a "crash course" kind of thing. We are also going to get married in a different diocese so that could also explain it. :)

I am (usually) the beneficiary.

I have heard of some Catholic churches in the USA allowing this. You're getting your pre-cana course in through an alternate method, so no worries for you.

Thanks everyone. It's nice to know we don't have to worry about any legal stuff in order to renew our vows. We won't be doing the catholic wedding either. From the sounds of it, it's too complicated. We're renewing our vows for her family, not for the church. We'll also make sure we know all the requirements from whoever does the ceremony. Thanks for the advice.

There are no requirements for doing the ceremony, doesn't even need to be a minister/judge as the renewal of vows is just for "show".... OK, lots of food and beverages may be required for a good party after!

Initially we approacehd a couple of priests because her mom is superstitious, but we got way too much attitude, as if they thought they held some kind of power over us.

We didn't want to be married by child molesters and their administrative enablers just because they are superstitious and ignorant of science anyway. So we rented a pavilion at a water park and did our own ceremony with traditional Visayan vows. Her father married us. We actually did this before we applied K-1. The official wedding was almost a year later once she immigrated. That did, however, require holding off on sex until after we had children.

OK you will have to explain how you are planning that one!

If Mary can do it then so can anyone else. So we had two kids by immaculate conception. Plus I've been dead twice and come back to life. Jesus can keep the change.

Ya Constantine could spin a good yarn for sure....

I see you know your history. Good man.

Council of Nicea, baby. 325 CE. Bishop Eusebius at the right hand of Emperor Constantine fabricates an official church history. Forces a single canon on everyone, and the most absurd thing of all - make Jesus a trinity since neither of the three points of view could agree. A political settlement! The trinity never made sense to me until I read that history.

There were some other very interesting rulings at Nicea. Like you could be a Eunich as long as someone else cut off your working parts. If you cut them off yourself then it didn't count.

If one wants to know what the original christians were like, check out the correspondence between Pliny the Younger and Emperor Trajan in 112 CE. They seemed like pretty decent people. But there was no Jesus in their religion at that time.

Yup but even getting to that point required a lot of "grease" on the wheels.... bribery has been around a long time. There were three versions they were fighting over but once the grease was applied it went much smoother.

The catholic church may consider it a first marriage but the legal system does not and that was my reference... it only a renewal of vows.

I personally would rent a nice hall, re-new the vows for family and friends ... then have a party. Don't need a priest/minister for this at all.... more rules than NASCAR.

Jan 2014 we will be re-newing our vows in her province. I promised her a church wedding as I don't really care. It's her first marriage so she can have what she wants. Her plans have already changed without me saying much about it. The big wedding she had planed is already sizing down. She would rather spend the money elsewhere. Good girl. She is still throwing around the idea of having it in the Church with the priest. I'm not Catholic and I am divorced so we have that going against us.

Soon as we get her AP/EAD card we will be taking a visit home and I said we need to talk with the Priest. I will be bringing a bottle of good Whiskey and we will have a couple drinks.. If he doesn't drink and he doesn't seem receptive, we will do it on the beach with some Priest that we can find. The one thing we know for sure, there will be a lot of Pig screaming/killing going on early in the morning and it will take more than one banka boat to deliver the beer/booze/yallo... Also going to have friends and family coming too and it's everyones first time to the Phils except for my dad and my oldest son. SHould be interesting.

Philippine Consulate

Reporting a Marriage Contracted Outside the Philippines

A marriage where one or both of the contracting parties is a Filipino citizen must be reported to the Consulate in order for the said marriage to be properly registered and recorded with the Office of the Civil Registrar General in Manila.

The Consulate can only undertake the marriage registration process if the marriage took place within in its jurisdiction.

In general, divorces between Filipinos are not recognized under Philippine law, wherever the decree is obtained. However, in the case of mixed marriages e.g. between Filipinos and foreigners, Philippine law would allow a divorced Filipino to re-marry, if the alien spouse initiated the divorce proceedings. In this case, however, the Filipino spouse may be required to show proof or document of her previous husband's foreign citizenship

Decrees of annulment issued by Philippine courts pursuant to the Family Code would allow Filipinos to re-marry. A judicial decree declaring the nullity of a marriage from the beginning would allow re-marriage.

Please call (213) 637-3017 (Attn: Civil Registry Section) for further assistance or any questions.

Procedure and Requirements:

1. Four (4) original duly accomplished Report of Marriage Contracted Abroad form signed by husband and the wife.

a. Four (4) identical colored photographs of the husband and the wife, 1.77 in x 1.37 in, plain white background, taken within six months before the date of application, (Blurred or low quality photos are not accepted).

b. One (1) original or certified true copy and four (4) photocopies of the Marriage Certificate or Contract Extended Form (Original will be returned).

c. One (1) original or certified true copy and four (4) photocopies of the Birth Certificate of the husband and the wife. The Consular Officer reserves the right to require additional proof or documents from an applicant, to prove his/her citizenship or identity pursuant to the Philippine Passport Law (R.A. 8239) and the Foreign Service Act (R.A. 7157).

d. Report of Marriage Processing Fee: US$25.00 (non-refundable, payable only in cash when personally applying, or Postal money order or cashiers' check payable to the Philippine Consulate General, when applying by mail or courier; personal check and personal money order are not accepted).

Additional Requirements:

1. If either spouse was previously married and divorced, or previously married and marriage was subsequently annulled:

a. One (1) original or certified true copy and four (4) photocopies of the Judicial Decree of Divorce or Annulment.

2. If either spouse is a widow/widower:

a. One (1) original or certified true copy and four (4) photocopies of Death Certificate of deceased spouse (Original supporting documents ar returned).

3. Requirements for applicants who wishes to have his/her Report of Marriage returned by mail or courier separate from Passport Application.

a. Enclose either a $6.00 postal money order or cashiers' check or pre-paid U.S. Postal Service express mail envelope or courier of choice such as FEDEX, DHL or UPS. All applications submitted by mail or courier service, through travel agencies or representatives shall be duly notarized.

Note: Please take note of the mailing or courier tracking number since the Philippine Consulate General cannot assume responsibility for documents which have been mailed through the U.S. Postal Service or courier service.

4. Releasing Time

a. APPLICATION SUBMITTED PERSONALLY - Report of Marriage is released at least two (2) business days after receipt by the Consulate of the duly accomplished application form and all requirements.

b. APPLICATION SUBMITTED THROUGH MAIL OR COURIER - Report of Marriage is mailed within five (5) working days after receipt by the Consulate of the duly accomplished application form and all requirements.
