I have lots of dealings with non profits, all the people I deal with are staff - paid.

Oh so of course if YOU only deal with staff, I imagine how hard and difficult it is for you to imagine what are doing volunteers while YOU are dealing with staff...Then you should be aware that for most of non-profits, the number of the staff compared to the number of volunteers is just almost nothing...and for your information, since you are literally dying to know what I will be doing, I wont be sitting on a chair in an office behind a computer since as you should already have understood after all these unuseful messages, I do the work volunteers do, not staff, that is to say in my case teaching arts to young refugees and asylees. If you deal that much with non-profit (but ONLY with staff) you should learn more about this field, you would be very surprised

Evasive answers usually indicate something untoward.

You are not traveling in between a continuous stay in the US - you are simply ending one visa and coming back on another visa. In fact, you don't even have the B visa yet. You will get asked all these questions and more about why you want to go back so soon and what you are doing. I don't think it will go the way you want it to.

Lol it's really pathetic, you should really read the messages ! no where it is said it it s traveling between a continuous stay, as I CLEARLY say in my first message it will be exactly traveling between my J-1 visa and B-1 visa. And, seriously, you really think I am planning on applying for such a visa without knowing I will have to answer all these questions, I thought I said it enough times !!!! and I am more than ready for that, with all evidences that will be required. And, best of all, please let me know where I said I already had the B-visa because it's clearly said I didn't start yet the process!!! before making such comments, read everything carefully, we will both lose less time

If you just want to adjust your status you can do so using USCIS ELIS or mail in form i-539

If you change status and then leave the US, you can't come back using the 'new' status. But I think you know that already.

When my L visa expired I crossed the border and came back on a B visa, I was open with CBP on why i'm leaving and returning and had no issue. YMMV

Moderator hat off - Lincoln, since you are in the US right now, why don't you consider making an Infopass appointment at your local (closest) USCIS office and ask them your question in person? You can explain in more detail what volunteer position you intend to pursue and USCIS will be able to determine whether they would consider it to be a volunteer position for immigration related purposes or if it would fall into their category as an employment position. It is important to go by USCIS' definitions - which may not always be the ones we think they are - so it is best to consult them directly. You can make an Infopass appointment online by going to the USCIS website at http://www.uscis.gov , then in the left hand column (unless they've moved it again ) click on 'make infopass appointment', and follow the directions.

I would not waste any time calling the 1-800 information number listed for USCIS. That just goes to a call center where non-USCIS employees answer the phone and field responses from a sheet of standard answers, They are notorious for giving out misleading, incorrect and sometimes downright dangerous information and are thus called the 'Misinformation Line' more often than not. For truly difficult situations, they can refer you to a 2nd tier person who does work for Immigration, but it is not always easy to get through. The Call Center employees are encouraged not to forward call unless it obviously requires an immigration officer with access to higher security level information to answer the question. An Infopass is your best bet. Good luck.
