Thats what i heard. Do you know if you can atleast take all online classes even if the tuition stays the same? My f-1 visa only allowed me to take one online class a semester, but i commute to school and its quiet a drive. I was hoping to do all online classes next semester

Yes! :) I just changed my status from F1 too, and confirmed with my international advisor. I'm taking all online classes next semester as well.

Awesome! Did your school still charge you out of country fees?

I go to a private college so the tuition rate is the same. I can take classes at a public school for free because of the scholarships I have (if the classes I need are not offered at my college or conflicts with my schedule). I know most schools don't give you in-state tuition unless you've had the GC for over a year. But some schools will, if you can prove your close relationship to this state. Just depends... Financial Aid department should be able to help you!

Thanks! I hope the person who changed mine did it right. They never asked for my social and i thought they would need it. I should of asked but thought they would of asked if needed. I was told to change it with admissions by my international advisor, so my international advisor was not the one who made the change.

Hmm, your international advisor is the only one who can take you off SEVIS, but Admission takes over after that. I assume your advisor meant that you should discuss the rest with Admission now that you're no longer an international student. :)

She told me just before i got my green card that when i have it to go to admissions. Before i left i asked the guy if i needed to go to the international advisor and he said no. I dont know if admissions take care of talking with her.

Well, I guess just make sure you're taken off from SEVIS then. :/ My international advisor told me to inform her as soon as I'm approved for green card so she can take me off. Otherwise I'll still be in the system as a international student. There is a checkbox in the system for "adjust status" or something like that so they know you've become a LPR. It's also possible that your advisor has already taken you off when you talked to her about your adjustment, although she's not supposed to until you're approved.

So I just did the same thing peeps. I went to the international office and they just made a xerox copy of my green card and removed me from SEVIS. They did not ask for anything else. They told me to go to the registrar, so I went to the registrar and talked to the residence deputy who changed my status to resident. I am in a quarter system, and my university does require 365 days of physical presence in California from the date of the I-485 RECEIPT DATE (not the green card issuance- which is good). Luckily, I have already advanced to candidacy over a year ago, so I've been on resident tuition since then (it might be just my school's law and regulation) so for me it doesn't matter if it's been a year or not from the I-485 receipt date. Also, my school does not offer online courses (or at least, for sure not in my major). I hope this helps to someone a bit...

Hey guys. So i got my green card a few weeks ago, and went to change my status at school from international student to resident. Has anyone else done this and if so how long did it take to see the adjustment?

Schools have different policies on residency for tuition purposes. This is not an immigration matter. This is a school matter. Only the school will have the correct answers for you.

Go see your international student advisor about how to change from an international student to a regular student. See how long must you be a resident before qualifying for in-state tuition. Some schools require that you be a legal resident in state for one year (legally with a green card) before you qualify for in-state tuition. Your advisor can direct you to the right answer. We cannot help you because we don't know the rules at your school.
