Hello All,

I'm a US citizen and my wife arrived in US last week on CR1 visa. We are planning to go to Social security office next week to apply for SSN. However, we are not sure about the process to get the conditional green card. What's the process to get the green card?

Thanks,

Siva

You already went thru the process. Your wife should have a stamp in her passport that acts like the GC until the actual card arrives--it might take a month or a bit more give the holiays. That stamp is an I-551 stamp which is the GC and is valid for 1 year. You may want to wait on the SSC if you ticked 43a and 43b on the DS-230 form to have them send you a SSC automaticaly, but some times the SSA does not send it and a trip to the local office is required. I would wait until the new year before worrying about the GC or about going and getting a SSC.

Good luck,

Dave

When my wife arrived 4 moths ago she received to letters at the port entry in Lax, one of them was informing her that she received the CR1 visa and the green card will arrive at home, also that she has to remove condition status during the 90 days before the green card expire. About the social security she had to go to to social security after she received the green card.

My wife arrived on cr1 on 17 oct we got her ssn a couple weeks later then we got her gc in the mail the same day as her welcome letter, this week. so these things take time, but as said above the I551 in her passport acts as a temporary green card for one year.

Best of luck to you both in this new life.

It's a combination of the visa and a standard admission stamp on the page next to the visa that act as a temporary green card, not a special stamp by itself.
