Hi Everyone,

I just want to ask anybody who may have first hand answer to my question. I will be giving birth by March..my question is, i know the last day for filing the Tax return will be April ( ? - correct me if I am wrong )..so, by then the baby will be born already ( hoping for a safe delivery ) so my questions are:

1. Will the baby be ok to be added in our tax return granting she's born March and we file April? ( we normally file January but if the baby can be added then we can wait - i think)

2. How long before the baby gets his SSN?

Thank you!

The baby must be born in 2012 to be claimed on 2012 taxes. The fact that you have until April 15th to file those taxes does not change that.

For taxes filed before April 15, 2013, all life events, income, expenses, deductions MUST occur during the 2012 tax year or by December 31, 2012. If the baby was born on December 31st, 2012 then you could claim him/her. If you get married by Decemebr 31st, 2012 you get to file married filing jointly or married filing seperately. If you receive a large bonus on Decemebr 31st, 2012, you claim that as income for 2012. The majic date is the end of the year--December 31st as long as you file based on the calendar year and not a fiscal year, but that is another topic. You will be able to claim your child on your 2013 taxes which you will file by April 15, 2014.
