Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey said Wednesday there was "no way" for him or his staff to know that an unpaid college intern in his office was in this country illegally and had registered as a sex offender.

Menendez told MSNBC that his staff learned of the situation on Monday and that he himself found out just moments before going on the program.

"I didn't know anything about the young man's status" before that, said the senator, a passionate advocate for a comprehensive overhaul of immigration policy, ostensibly the main subject of the interview.

The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that immigration authorities arrested Luis Abrahan Sanchez Zavaleta, an 18-year-old immigrant from Peru, last Thursday. Sanchez came to the United States on a now-expired visitor visa and may be deported. The exact nature of his sex-related offense was not immediately clear because it occurred when he was a minor, the AP said. The news agency cited an anonymous official as saying that the Homeland Security Department instructed federal agents not to arrest him until after Election Day."There's no way we could know about his status" from a standard background check because he was under 18 at the time of the infraction, Menendez told MSNBC. He also denied knowing anything about the alleged timing of the arrest.

The senator said the teenager had joined his office's "nonpaying college intern program" and "didn't indicate anything about his status" when he came aboard. "We have a whole bunch of college interns," the lawmaker said, adding that his New Jersey staff director had fired Sanchez.

"It does speak volumes about why we need comprehensive immigration reform, because I can't know who is here to pursue the American dream vs. who is here to do it damage" the senator said.

Good Job senator... !!! Now he want us to believe they do not check any background or anything before they let them work in their offices.

Trouble with reading comprehension again? No, that's not what anyone wants you to believe. It's your paranoia playing tricks on you again. You should consider seeking professional help for that condition. I'm worried about you. Next you'll tell me that you own firearms. We all know that firearms and paranoia are a dangerous mix.

Democrat, illegal alien, sex offender

That fits the criteria for an Obama supporter.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Some of the Obama supporters like Mr.BigDog cannot comprehend that the laws these sign into laws they need to follow those too.

How does any employer verify someone has entered country legally and has valid status in the country?

Senator can do that too…… he would conveniently disregard the lines in red Homeland security was order not to arrest this guy until after elections were over.

I had specifically highlighted it but still some ppl choose not to read or read it and disregard it.

Now Mr. BigDog would ask for evidence… unfortunately the guy was arrested should be good evidence.

i am guessing that the vetting for interns - that process - is different, totally different, than anything else.

Look, I understand that there's a certain fascination that you have developed with me here. That's okay. It happens. You know, I can't help that you have not been taught to put one and one together or to distinguish between a job - which requires employment eligibility verification - and a non-paying internship which does not because, well, it ain't "employment".

The "lines in red", eh? The smoking gun! From an anonymous source. Yeah, those are the best smoking guns. Always.

That's right. We're talking about a non-compensated intern here. All of a sudden, that engagement isn't employment. Hence, the intern does not need to be eligible to work. I-9 and all that doesn't apply. They did a standard back=ground check on the dude which came back blank because whatever infraction he had happened to have occurred when he was still a minor. But don't tell anyone. Some folks tend to get mighty confused when confronted with those pesky facts. They rather get all aroused over what some anonymous source said. ;)

I can understand you live in your own little world and its hard for you to understand the reality of the life and there is no problem with it.

Yes I cannot put one and one togeather.... :)

I can also understand when you are proven wrong and you cannot argue you try to pick on single word and try to prove you know everything....

As per you research by Harvard is shoddy... news reports by AP are #######... you just continue to demonstrate your ability to connect dots and understand the reality. :)

Really thats all they check when they grant someone access to the Senate building?

I think TSA has more information about me than that.... :)

I guess interns cannot be national security threat.

How did they find out his status otherwise?

Nor can you spell together, for that matter. Tough titties.

Proven wrong? By who? You?

You got him good by pointing out his spelling error! [ /sarcasm]
